Tteokbokki Ingredients

  • 10 pieces Garaetteok (rice cakes, approx. 300g)
  • 30g Green Onion (about 1/4 stalk)
  • 150ml Water

Spicy & Sweet Tteokbokki Sauce

  • 2 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 2 Tbsp Cooking Oil
  • 1 Tbsp Brown Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Oligodang (corn syrup or similar sweetener)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare all the ingredients for your Tteokbokki. Rinse the Garaetteok under cold water. Wash and thinly slice the green onion.

Step 1

Step 2

Thinly slice the green onion into approximately 2-3 cm pieces. Slice them neatly, as they will be used as a garnish for the finished dish.

Step 2

Step 3

Heat a pan over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of cooking oil. Add 2 tablespoons of gochujang and stir-fry for about 30 seconds. This step helps to cook out the raw flavor of the gochujang and create a smoother, more flavorful sauce base.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the gochujang is fragrant and slightly softened, add the prepared Garaetteok to the pan. Gently separate the rice cakes so they don’t stick together.

Step 4

Step 5

Continue to cook over medium heat, stirring gently, for about 1 minute to coat the rice cakes evenly with the gochujang sauce. Stir-frying them like this will give them a slightly chewy exterior.

Step 5

Step 6

Now, pour in 150ml of water. It’s important to add the right amount of water, as the sauce will reduce and thicken as it cooks.

Step 6

Step 7

Add 1 tablespoon of brown sugar for sweetness and 2 tablespoons of oligodang for a glossy finish and extra sweetness. The balance between spicy and sweet is key to this delicious Tteokbokki.

Step 7

Step 8

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Stir continuously as the sauce reduces and thickens, ensuring the gochujang doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan. Cook until the sauce coats the tteok beautifully.

Step 8

Step 9

Your Tteokbokki is ready when the sauce has reduced by about half, becoming thick and glossy, and coating the rice cakes perfectly! Sprinkle the sliced green onions on top for a fresh finish. Enjoy your homemade Seojin’s Kitchen-style Gochujang Tteokbokki!
