It’s a perfect choice for special occasions, a late-night snack, or a simple lunch. This easy-to-follow recipe uses canned whelks, ensuring anyone can create a delicious meal.
Main Ingredients- Thin noodles (Somen) for 2 servings (approx. 200g)
- Fresh baby greens 1 handful (approx. 30g)
- Canned whelks 1 can (200g can)
- Bibim sauce (store-bought or homemade) 2 Tbsp
- Toasted sesame oil 2 Tbsp
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Fill a large pot with plenty of water and bring it to a rolling boil over high heat. Once the water is boiling vigorously, take about a 500-won coin-sized portion of thin noodles (per serving) and carefully add them to the boiling water. Gently loosen the noodles with chopsticks to prevent them from sticking together. When the water starts to boil over, add half a cup of cold water to lower the temperature. Repeat this process 2-3 times. This method will make the noodles chewier and more elastic. Once the noodles are cooked, immediately drain them in a colander. Rinse them several times under cold running water to remove excess starch, then drain thoroughly. This step ensures the noodles won’t become mushy and will taste delicious in your bibim-myeon.
Step 2
Wash the baby greens thoroughly. You can rinse them under running water, or for extra freshness, soak them in a bowl of cold water with 1-2 drops of vinegar for about a minute, then drain. Soaking in vinegar water helps to sanitize the greens and enhances their crispiness. Gently shake off excess water and set them aside.
Step 3
Arrange the cooked and drained thin noodles attractively in a serving bowl. Pile the fresh baby greens generously on top of the noodles. The addition of green vegetables makes the bibim-myeon look much more appetizing.
Step 4
Now, for the star ingredient: drain most of the liquid from the canned whelks and place the whelks neatly on top of the noodles. It’s important to drain the liquid well, as too much can make the bibim-myeon taste watery. Drizzle 2 tablespoons of bibim sauce over the whelks, adjusting the amount to your preference. Finally, add 2 tablespoons of toasted sesame oil for a nutty aroma and sprinkle with sesame seeds for a finishing touch.
Step 5
All the components are now ready! Use chopsticks or a mixing spoon to thoroughly combine the noodles, whelks, greens, and bibim sauce. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly coated with the spicy, sweet, and tangy sauce. This step is key to achieving the best flavor. Enjoy your delicious Whelk Bibim-myeon with a side of warm broth or cold water! It’s a fantastic dish when you’re craving something special.
