Main Ingredients
- 500g Tteokbokki rice cakes (If using gara-tteok, slice into bite-sized pieces)
- 10 Vienna sausages
- 1/2 green onion, chopped
- Sesame oil, for coating (generous amount)
Spicy & Sweet Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp Soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp Oligodang (corn syrup or other liquid sweetener)
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 1.5 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 2/3 Tbsp Minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp Cheongju (rice wine)
- 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp Soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp Oligodang (corn syrup or other liquid sweetener)
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 1.5 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 2/3 Tbsp Minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp Cheongju (rice wine)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
In a bowl, combine gochujang, soy sauce, oligodang, sugar, gochugaru, minced garlic, and cheongju. Mix thoroughly until smooth to create the delicious oil tteokbokki sauce. (Adjust sweetness and spiciness to your preference.)
Step 2
Make crisscross cuts on the Vienna sausages. This helps the sauce penetrate better and makes them look appealing when cooked. Briefly blanching them in hot water beforehand can make them even cleaner to eat.
Step 3
Lightly rinse the tteokbokki rice cakes in cold water and drain them. If you are using thick gara-tteok (cylinder-shaped rice cakes), slice them into bite-sized pieces first, then rinse them in cold water and drain.
Step 4
Heat a generous amount of sesame oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the prepared rice cakes and the cut Vienna sausages. Stir-fry until the rice cakes become soft and chewy.
Step 5
Once the rice cakes are softened, add the prepared sauce and increase the heat to medium. Stir-fry quickly to coat everything evenly. The key is to stir-fry rapidly over medium heat rather than high heat to prevent burning. It’s recommended to add the sauce gradually, tasting as you go, and adjusting to your preference.
Step 6
Continue stir-frying quickly until the sauce is evenly distributed over the rice cakes and sausages for a delicious oil tteokbokki! Finally, add the chopped green onions and stir-fry briefly once more. If your children don’t like spicy food or green onions, you can omit them or mince them very finely.
