A beloved side dish for all ages, fish cakes are a staple in Korean cuisine. This easy-to-make dish is perfect for beginner cooks and makes a great addition to any dinner table. Enjoy this simple yet delicious recipe!
Ingredients- 4 sheets of square fish cakes
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp red chili flakes (gochugaru)
- A little chopped green onion
- 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, slice the square fish cakes into bite-sized pieces. I like to cut them lengthwise in half and then slice them into thin, long strips of less than 1 cm thickness so they absorb the seasoning well. Feel free to adjust the thickness or shape to your preference.
Step 2
Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil. Once boiling, carefully add the sliced fish cakes.
Step 3
When the fish cakes float to the surface, immediately turn off the heat. Rinse them quickly under cold water and drain thoroughly. This process removes excess oil and gives the fish cakes a pleasantly chewy texture. Let them drain well in a colander.
Step 4
In a bowl, combine the drained fish cakes with 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp red chili flakes, a bit of chopped green onion, and 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds. Gently mix everything together with your hands until the seasoning is evenly distributed and coats the fish cakes.
Step 5
Isn’t this simple seasoning great, without the need for frying? If you prefer a tangier flavor, feel free to add a little vinegar or sugar to your liking. You can also add thinly sliced onions along with the fish cakes for a delightful crunch.
Step 6
Your delicious spicy seasoned fish cakes are ready! They are mild due to not being fried, yet offer a satisfying chewiness and a flavorful kick, making them a perfect side dish for dinner. Enjoy this simple yet incredibly tasty recipe!
