Ingredients
  • Shrimp 500g (peeled and deveined)
  • Baby Bok Choy 100g
  • Red Bell Pepper 40g
  • Yellow Bell Pepper 40g
  • Minced Garlic 50g (approx. 3.5 Tbsp)
  • Dried Red Chilies 10 (adjust to taste)
  • Hao Chi Mala Sauce 90g (approx. 6 Tbsp)
  • Cooking Oil (for stir-frying)
  • Toasted Sesame Seeds (for garnish)
  • Scallions (for garnish)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Begin by thoroughly washing the baby bok choy. Cut them lengthwise into 2-3 sections. This way of cutting helps maintain a pleasant crunch and allows the sauce to adhere better.

Step 2

Prepare the bell peppers by removing the seeds and membranes. Dice them into bite-sized pieces, about 1cm in thickness. The vibrant colors of the bell peppers will make your dish visually appealing.

Step 3

Finely chop the scallions. Their aromatic quality will complement the rich mala sauce, adding another layer of deliciousness.

Step 4

Heat a wok or large skillet over medium-low heat with a generous amount of cooking oil. Add the minced garlic and stir-fry until fragrant, being careful not to burn it. Once the garlic is aromatic, add the chopped scallions and continue to stir-fry until they soften and release their sweet fragrance.

Step 5

Add the diced bell peppers and the prepared shrimp to the wok. Sprinkle with freshly ground black pepper. Stir-fry over medium heat until the shrimp turn pink and opaque, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 6

Once the shrimp are beautifully colored, add the Hao Chi Mala Sauce and the dried red chilies (cut into manageable pieces if large). Stir vigorously to ensure all ingredients are evenly coated with the sauce. Cook for another 1-2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Step 7

Finally, add the prepared baby bok choy to the wok. Stir-fry over high heat for just about 1 minute, or until the leaves are wilted but the stems remain crisp. Overcooking will make the bok choy mushy, so speed is key here. Remove from heat immediately.

Step 8

Transfer the finished Mala Shrimp to a serving platter. Garnish generously with toasted sesame seeds and thinly sliced scallions for a final touch of flavor and visual appeal.

Step 9

Your delicious Spicy & Numbing Mala Shrimp is ready to impress! Its vibrant appearance is matched only by its incredible flavor, a perfect balance of heat and the unique numbing sensation of mala. This dish is fantastic for entertaining guests, as a special treat, or simply as a delightful accompaniment to drinks. With fresh shrimp and the fantastic Hao Chi Mala Sauce, you can easily recreate this exotic dish at home.
