  • Occasion : Everyday
  • Cooking : Seasoned mix
  • Servings : 2 servings
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Ingredients

  • Noodles (Somen) for 2 servings
  • 1 can (300g) Canned Whelks
  • 1 Cucumber
  • 1/2 Onion
  • 2 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 1 Tbsp Sugar
  • A pinch of Sesame seeds
  • 2 Tbsp Vinegar

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

We’re going to start making the whelk salad with noodles now.

Step 1

Step 2

First, prepare the vegetables. Wash the cucumber thoroughly, remove the seedy core if you prefer, and slice it thinly into julienne strips. Peel the onion and slice it thinly. For a milder flavor and crispier texture, you can soak the sliced onion in cold water for a few minutes, then drain it well. Place the prepared cucumber and onion in a large mixing bowl.

Step 2

Step 3

Next, prepare the whelks. Drain the liquid from the canned whelks. Cut the whelk meat into bite-sized pieces; cutting them into 2-3 pieces is usually good. Avoid cutting them too small so you can still enjoy their chewy texture. Add the cut whelks to the bowl with the julienned vegetables.

Step 3

Step 4

Cook the noodles according to the package directions, usually about 3-4 minutes in boiling water until al dente. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Once cooked, immediately rinse the noodles under cold running water to stop the cooking process and drain them thoroughly in a colander. Ensuring the noodles are well-drained is key to preventing a watery salad.

Step 4

Step 5

Now, let’s make the dressing and combine everything. To the bowl with the vegetables and whelks, add 2 Tbsp Gochujang, 1 Tbsp Gochugaru, 1 Tbsp Sugar, and 2 Tbsp Vinegar. Gently mix and massage the ingredients with your hands until everything is evenly coated with the sauce. This ‘massaging’ action helps the flavors meld beautifully.

Step 5

Step 6

Doesn’t this look appetizing? The vibrant color and the tangy aroma of the sauce are truly inviting.

Step 6

Step 7

Add the drained noodles to the bowl with the dressed whelk and vegetable mixture. Toss everything together gently until the noodles are well coated. For an extra boost of flavor and to create a smoother sauce consistency, you can add about 1-2 tablespoons of the reserved whelk liquid. Adjust to your preference.

Step 7

Step 8

Finally, transfer the whelk noodle salad to a serving plate. Sprinkle with a pinch of sesame seeds for garnish. Your delicious, refreshing, and slightly spicy whelk noodle salad is ready to be enjoyed! Experience the delightful combination of chewy noodles, crisp vegetables, and tender whelks.
