Spicy and Sweet Tteokbokki with Steamed Dumplings
Holiday Lunch: A Korean Snack Day with Store-Bought Tteokbokki and Steamed Dim Sum Dumplings
Even when staying home due to the current situation, meals are still a delightful part of the day. Enjoyed this lunch with store-bought tteokbokki and dim sum dumplings that my brother-in-law brought over. It’s a quick and satisfying meal perfect for a cozy day in.
Tteokbokki Ingredients- Store-bought Tteokbokki (includes rice cakes and sauce)
- 1 cup water or broth (approx. 200ml)
- 1/4 onion, thinly sliced
- 1/2 tsp minced garlic (optional)
- A small amount of green onion or scallion, chopped
- A pinch of sesame seeds
- A drizzle of sesame oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
In a pot for the tteokbokki, combine the store-bought sauce, rice cakes, and 1 cup of water or broth. Gently separate the rice cakes if they are stuck together.
Step 2
Add the sliced onion and minced garlic, if using. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Simmer for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the rice cakes are soft and the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency. You can adjust the cooking time based on how chewy you like your rice cakes.
Step 3
When the tteokbokki is nearly done, reduce the heat to low. Stir in the chopped green onions or scallions. Finish with a drizzle of sesame oil and a sprinkle of sesame seeds for extra fragrance. Transfer the finished tteokbokki to a serving dish.
Step 4
Garnish the tteokbokki with a sprinkle of sesame seeds for a visually appealing finish.
Step 5
To steam the dumplings, fill a steamer pot with water and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, arrange the dim sum dumplings in the steamer basket, cover, and steam for about 8-10 minutes. Steam until the dumplings are translucent and heated through.
Step 6
Garnish the warm steamed dumplings with chopped green onions or scallions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Serve alongside the spicy and sweet tteokbokki for a complete and satisfying Korean snack meal.
