Spicy and Sweet Tteokbokki to Relieve Stress
Super Easy Tteokbokki Recipe
I had a lot of stress from work today and was craving something spicy. So, I made this for myself and ate it all! It was so satisfying.
Main Ingredients- 100g Tteokguk Tteok (rice cakes for soup, chosen for a soft and chewy texture)
- 4 pieces Square Fish Cakes (lightly blotted to remove excess oil for a smoother texture)
- 1 stalk Green Onion (adds a fresh flavor and aroma)
Spicy & Sweet Sauce- 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste, the fundamental spicy base)
- 1.5 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, adjust for more or less heat)
- 1.5 Tbsp Sugar (balances the spiciness and enhances savory notes)
- 1 cup Water (the base liquid to cook the rice cakes and ingredients)
- 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste, the fundamental spicy base)
- 1.5 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, adjust for more or less heat)
- 1.5 Tbsp Sugar (balances the spiciness and enhances savory notes)
- 1 cup Water (the base liquid to cook the rice cakes and ingredients)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare all the ingredients for a delicious tteokbokki. Wash the tteokguk tteok, square fish cakes, and green onion, then cut them into bite-sized pieces.
Step 2
Soak the tteokguk tteok in cold water for about 10 minutes beforehand. This step is crucial to make the rice cakes softer and chewier, allowing them to absorb the sauce better.
Step 3
Now, let’s make the star of the dish: the sauce! In a bowl, combine 1 Tbsp gochujang, 1.5 Tbsp gochugaru, and 1.5 Tbsp sugar. Mix well. (This ratio is for 1-2 servings; for 2-3 servings, double each ingredient amount.)
Step 4
Prepare 1 cup (about 200ml) of water. (For 2-3 servings, use about 1.5 cups of water. Adjust the water amount if you prefer a soupier tteokbokki.)
Step 5
In a wide pan, add the soaked rice cakes, fish cakes, and green onion. Pour in half of the prepared sauce. Stir everything together over medium heat and let it simmer until the ingredients are coated. Initially, let it cook slightly to allow the rice cakes to absorb some of the flavor.
Step 6
Once the rice cakes start to soften and cook through, add the remaining sauce. Stir continuously to ensure the sauce is evenly distributed and to prevent the rice cakes from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Keep stirring as it cooks.
Step 7
If you prefer a soupier style of tteokbokki, you can add a little more water at this stage and be careful not to reduce it too much. This will give you a delicious, brothy tteokbokki. The cooking time and reduction level can be adjusted to your preference.
Step 8
Finally, transfer the beautifully cooked tteokbokki to a serving plate and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds for a nutty finish. Enjoy your homemade, delicious tteokbokki!
