Main Ingredients

  • 200g Tteokbokki rice cakes (chewy or soft type)
  • 10 mini dumplings (optional, add to your preference)
  • 1/3 cup green onion, cut into large pieces
  • 1/2 onion, thinly sliced

Golden Sauce

  • 300ml water
  • 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste, generous)
  • 3 Tbsp Oligodang (corn syrup, adjust sweetness)
  • 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili powder, for extra spice)
  • 0.5 chicken stock cube (for umami boost!)
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce (for depth of flavor)
  • Pinch of black pepper (for aroma)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Let’s start by making the delicious Tteokbokki sauce! In a pot, combine 300ml of water, 1 Tbsp Gochujang, 3 Tbsp Oligodang, 1 Tbsp Gochugaru, half a chicken stock cube, 1 Tbsp soy sauce, and a pinch of black pepper. Stir everything together over high heat until it comes to a boil.

Step 1

Step 2

Once the sauce is rapidly boiling, add the large pieces of green onion and the sliced onion. Let them simmer in the sauce; the natural sweetness from the vegetables will enhance the overall flavor.

Step 2

Step 3

After the vegetables have started to boil vigorously again, add the Tteokbokki rice cakes first. It’s a good idea to stir occasionally to prevent the rice cakes from sticking together as they cook.

Step 3

Step 4

When the rice cakes become soft and have absorbed some of the sauce, add the mini dumplings. Continue to simmer over medium-low heat until the dumplings are cooked and the sauce reaches your desired consistency. If it becomes too thick, you can add a little more water.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the Tteokbokki is deliciously simmered, transfer it to a serving bowl. It’s best enjoyed piping hot!

Step 5

Step 6

For an even more delightful meal, especially during snack time or for dinner, enjoy your Tteokbokki with a side of Gimbap (seaweed rice rolls). The combination is always a winner!
