Main Ingredients
  • 1 Tbsp perilla oil (deulgireum)
  • 1/4 head of kimchi (well-fermented), chopped
  • 1 can of tuna, drained
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil (chamgireum)
  • A pinch of sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • A pinch of black pepper (optional)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare some warm rice. I’ve made a mix of white rice with black rice, brown rice, and barley for a fluffy texture. Delicious side dishes are even better with freshly cooked, warm rice!

Step 2

Preheat a frying pan over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of perilla oil. Add the chopped kimchi and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Stir-fry them together. The sugar helps to balance the tartness of the kimchi and enhances its savory flavor. Cook for about 3-4 minutes until the kimchi softens and its color changes.

Step 3

Once the kimchi is well-stirred, add the drained 1 can of tuna. Gently mix to avoid breaking up the tuna and stir-fry for about 1 more minute. Be careful not to overcook the tuna, as it can become dry and crumbly.

Step 4

Turn off the heat, drizzle in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, and finish with a pinch of black pepper (if using) and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. This adds a wonderful nutty aroma and flavor.

Step 5

There you have it – a simple yet incredibly delicious stir-fried tuna and kimchi! The combination of well-fermented kimchi and savory tuna is a true flavor bomb that makes you want to finish a whole bowl of rice. It’s also a perfect hearty side dish for your husband’s lunchbox on busy mornings.
