- 3 tsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 5 tsp Soy Sauce (or seasoned soy sauce)
- 1 tsp Minced Garlic
- 1 tsp Sugar
- 1.5 tsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 3 tsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 5 tsp Soy Sauce (or seasoned soy sauce)
- 1 tsp Minced Garlic
- 1 tsp Sugar
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, we’ll prepare the squid. Separate the head from the body and remove the innards for a clean taste. If you dislike the slimy texture, this step might seem a bit challenging, but you can do it by following along!
Step 2
Locate the area around the squid’s mouth (between the head and body) and press firmly. The hard beak (teeth) will pop out easily! Removing this makes the squid’s texture much more pleasant.
Step 3
Peel and wash the onion. Prepare the green onion, using frozen ones is fine if you have them, or use fresh green onion cut into slices or small pieces.
Step 4
Let’s make the sauce for delicious stir-fried squid! In a bowl, combine 1.5 tsp gochujang, 3 tsp gochugaru, 5 tsp soy sauce, and 1 tsp minced garlic. Add 1 tsp of sugar and stir well until all ingredients are evenly mixed.
Step 5
Now, cut the prepared squid into bite-sized pieces. If you cut them too thinly, they might break apart while stir-frying. Aim for about 1.5cm to 2cm wide pieces. If the squid is thick, you can cut it in half lengthwise before slicing.
Step 6
Heat a large pan with some cooking oil. Add the green onions first and stir-fry them. (Tip: Using a new pan with good non-stick coating can make cooking more enjoyable, as old pans might get scratched!)
Step 7
Stir-fry the green onions over medium heat until they release a fragrant aroma. The aroma of the green onions helps mask any fishy smell from the squid and adds depth of flavor.
Step 8
Once you can smell the green onions and they look slightly softened, add the sliced squid to the pan. Stir-frying over high heat quickly will prevent the squid from becoming tough and keep it deliciously chewy.
Step 9
Immediately after adding the squid, sprinkle in 1 tsp of sugar and stir-fry together. Sugar enhances the umami of the squid and helps the sauce adhere better.
Step 10
After stir-frying the squid with sugar for a moment, add the sliced onions. Right after adding the onions, pour in all the prepared sauce.
Step 11
Now, let everything simmer and cook until the sauce thickens slightly and coats all the ingredients. Stir-fry over medium heat until the squid is fully cooked and the sauce is reduced to your liking. Once the onions are translucent and tender, turn off the heat and transfer the stir-fried squid to a storage container.
Step 12
Ta-da! Your delicious, spicy, and sweet stir-fried squid is ready! Doesn’t it look appetizing? It’s so easy to make, so give it a try! ^^
