Main Ingredients
  • 180g Octopus (cleaned and cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1/2 Onion (thinly sliced)
  • 1 Cheongyang chili pepper (for a spicy kick, thinly sliced diagonally)
  • 1/2 Green onion stalk (for fragrance, thinly sliced diagonally)
  • 1/4 tsp Sesame oil (for a nutty aroma!)
  • A pinch of toasted sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • 2 bowls of warm cooked rice (to serve the octopus over)

Spicy and Sweet Sauce Ingredients
  • 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 2 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, for color and spice)
  • 1 Tbsp Soy sauce (for umami)
  • 1/2 Tbsp Sugar (to balance the sweetness)
  • 1 Tbsp Oligodang (corn syrup or rice syrup, for gloss and mild sweetness)
  • 1 Tbsp Minced garlic (for flavor)
  • 1 Tbsp Mirin (rice wine, to remove any fishy smell)
  • A pinch of Black pepper (to enhance flavor)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the vegetables. Thinly slice the onion. Cut the green onion and Cheongyang chili pepper diagonally. Slicing them this way ensures the sauce marinates well and makes the dish visually appealing.

Step 2

Now, let’s make the star of this delicious rice bowl: the sauce! In a small bowl, combine the gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, sugar, oligodang, minced garlic, mirin, and black pepper. Stir well with a spoon until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed. A well-dissolved sauce makes for a tastier dish.

Step 3

Heat a pan over medium heat and add a little cooking oil. Add the sliced onions and stir-fry until they become translucent. Sautéing the onions first brings out their sweetness and softens them.

Step 4

Once the onions are translucent, add the prepared octopus and the sauce mixture to the pan. Stir-fry over high heat quickly. It’s important not to overcook the octopus, as it can become tough. Ensure the sauce is evenly coated on the octopus.

Step 5

When the octopus is cooked through, add the diagonally sliced Cheongyang chili pepper and green onion. Stir-fry briefly, just enough to let their fragrance and crispness shine through. Avoid overcooking them.

Step 6

Once all ingredients are well combined and cooked, turn off the heat. Finish by drizzling a little sesame oil for a nutty aroma and sprinkling toasted sesame seeds on top. Serve generously over warm rice and mix well for a fantastic Stir-fried Octopus Rice Bowl!
