Main Ingredients
  • 200g fish cakes (eomuk)
  • 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
  • 4 Tbsp soy sauce
  • A pinch of sesame seeds
  • 1 Tbsp corn syrup (oligosaccharide)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare your fish cakes. We’ll be making a delicious spicy red fish cake stir-fry using 200g of fish cakes. While this recipe only uses fish cakes, adding onions or cheongyang peppers according to your preference will create an even richer flavor.

Step 2

I’m using two types of fish cakes: round ones and flat ones. You can stuff the round fish cakes with imitation crab sticks for a special touch, or make a fantastic red fish cake stir-fry with just the flat ones. If you slice them long and thin, they can also be used as a filling for spicy fish cake kimbap.

Step 3

Slice the flat fish cakes into bite-sized strips.

Step 4

Slice the round fish cakes into bite-sized pieces as well, ensuring they aren’t too thick. If you plan to add onions or cheongyang peppers, slice them thinly or chop them finely at this stage.

Step 5

Lightly grease a heated pan with just a tiny bit of oil. Fish cakes already contain oil, so using too much will make the dish greasy. Add the fish cakes and stir-fry them gently.

Step 6

Once the fish cakes start to become slightly golden and lightly browned, proceed to the next step.

Step 7

Adding a little water is a key tip for making moist and delicious stir-fried fish cakes. The amount of water should be proportional to the amount of fish cakes; I added about 3 tablespoons.

Step 8

Add 4 tablespoons of soy sauce to the fish cakes with water to season them.

Step 9

Sprinkle in 1 tablespoon of red pepper flakes and a pinch of sesame seeds. Stir and cook until all the seasonings are well combined.

Step 10

Once the red pepper flakes and soy sauce are well incorporated into the fish cakes, drizzle 1 to 2 tablespoons of corn syrup (oligosaccharide) or rice syrup around the edges of the pan as a finishing touch. There’s no need to add extra sugar. Using corn syrup at the end to add shine and sweetness is another golden recipe tip!

Step 11

Simmer for a short while until slightly thickened, and your delicious spicy red fish cake stir-fry is complete!

Step 12

For children or those who don’t enjoy spicy food, simply omit the red pepper flakes and follow the rest of the steps to make a delicious soy sauce-based fish cake stir-fry. This is how you can easily create a sweet and tasty staple side dish, stir-fried fish cakes.
