Main Ingredients- 200g fish cakes (odeng), cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1/2 stalk green onion (about 50g), cut into large pieces
Spicy and Sweet Sauce- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp Allulose (or sugar/corn syrup, adjust to taste)
- 3-4 Tbsp water
- 1.5 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, adjust to spice preference)
- 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp Allulose (or sugar/corn syrup, adjust to taste)
- 3-4 Tbsp water
- 1.5 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, adjust to spice preference)
- 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Let’s start by preparing the delicious sauce for your stir-fried fish cakes. In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, allulose, gochugaru, minced garlic, and water. Stir well and let it sit for a moment to allow the chili flakes to soften and meld with the other ingredients. Pre-mixing the sauce makes the cooking process much smoother.
Step 2
Now, prepare the main ingredients. Cut the fish cakes into generous, bite-sized pieces – about 2-3 cm is ideal for easy handling with chopsticks and a pleasant texture. Also, chop the green onion into similarly large pieces.
Step 3
Get your pan ready. Add 1 tablespoon of cooking oil to a small pan or wok and heat it over medium-low heat. Be careful not to overheat the pan, as this can cause the ingredients to burn.
Step 4
Once the pan is warm, add the chopped green onion and minced garlic. Sauté over medium heat for about 1 minute, until fragrant. Sautéing the aromatics first will infuse the dish with a wonderful aroma and flavor.
Step 5
When the green onion and garlic are fragrant, add the cut fish cakes. Reduce the heat to low and stir-fry for about 1 minute. This brief sauté allows the fish cakes to absorb the flavors of the aromatics. Avoid overcooking at this stage, as it can make the fish cakes tough.
Step 6
Now it’s time to add the sauce. Pour about two-thirds of the prepared sauce over the fish cakes. Stir and toss well to coat the fish cakes evenly. It’s a good idea to add the sauce in stages, tasting as you go, to achieve the perfect flavor balance.
Step 7
Taste the fish cakes as they cook. If you find the flavor needs adjusting, add the remaining one-third of the sauce. This recipe’s sauce ratio is balanced for 200g of fish cakes, but feel free to adjust the quantities to suit your personal preference.
Step 8
Continue to stir-fry over low heat for about 2 more minutes, ensuring the sauce doesn’t burn. If the sauce becomes too thick, add a tablespoon or two of water at a time until you reach your desired consistency. Cook until the sauce is well-absorbed and the fish cakes are glossy.
Step 9
Your delicious, moist, and flavorful spicy and sweet stir-fried fish cakes are ready! Serve hot with rice for a fantastic side dish. They are also perfect for packed lunches. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days.
