Main Ingredients

  • Tteokbokki rice cakes (rice flour type) 8 pieces (approx. 150g)
  • Wide fish cakes 2.5 sheets (approx. 100g)
  • Cabbage 1 handful (approx. 50g)
  • Onion 1/2 medium (approx. 70g)
  • Boiled egg 1
  • Fine gochugaru (Korean chili powder) 6 Tbsp
  • Sugar 5 Tbsp
  • Soy sauce (jin ganjang) 2 Tbsp
  • Ramen noodles 1 serving

Broth Ingredients

  • Dried kelp (dashima) 4 pieces (approx. 10cm x 10cm)
  • Water 800ml

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

[Making the Flavorful Broth] In a wide frying pan, combine 800ml of cold water, 2.5 sheets of wide fish cakes (cut into smaller pieces if large), and 4 pieces of dried kelp. Let it soak for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse. After soaking, turn the heat to high (strong fire) and bring the water to a rolling boil. Once boiling, remove the kelp and fish cakes. Do not boil the broth further; set it aside.

Step 1

Step 2

[Creating the Perfect Sauce Mix] In a bowl, mix together 6 Tbsp of fine gochugaru and 5 Tbsp of sugar. Stir until well combined and there are no lumps. This ratio is key to achieving the perfect sweet and spicy balance!

Step 2

Step 3

[Enhancing the Fish Cake Flavor] Without adding any oil, place the 2.5 sheets of fish cakes (previously used for the broth) into a frying pan. Stir-fry over high heat for 3 minutes until they become slightly golden and chewy. This step adds a wonderful texture and depth of flavor to the fish cakes.

Step 3

Step 4

[Adding Vegetables and Rice Cakes] Reheat the prepared broth over high heat. Once the broth is boiling, add 1 handful of chopped cabbage, 1/2 sliced onion, and 8 rice cakes. Using rice flour rice cakes (tteokbokki tteok) will give you a chewier texture, but feel free to use other types if you prefer.

Step 4

Step 5

[Incorporating the Sauce] Immediately after adding the vegetables and rice cakes, add the pre-mixed gochugaru and sugar sauce, the stir-fried fish cakes, and 2 Tbsp of soy sauce. Stir everything together gently to ensure the sauce coats all the ingredients evenly.

Step 5

Step 6

[Adding Ramen and Finishing Touches] Once the mixture returns to a simmer, add 1 serving of ramen noodles. Use tongs to gently separate the noodles and mix them into the sauce. Let it simmer and thicken for about 3 more minutes until the noodles are cooked and the sauce has slightly reduced. Your delicious, spicy, and sweet Rabokki is ready to be enjoyed hot!
