Main Ingredients

  • 500g Korean fish cakes (Odeng, about 4-5 sheets)
  • 1/2 medium onion
  • 1/4 large scallion (green onion)
  • 2 Cheongyang chili peppers (optional, adjust for spiciness)

Seasoning

  • 4 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 3 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup water (100ml)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, briefly rinse the fish cakes under cold water, or blanch them in boiling water for about 30 seconds to remove excess oil for a cleaner taste. Cut them into bite-sized pieces, about 2x5cm rectangles.

Step 1

Step 2

Slice the onion thinly into strips. Slice the scallion diagonally. If using Cheongyang chili peppers, remove the seeds and finely chop them for an extra spicy kick.

Step 2

Step 3

Heat 1-2 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the minced garlic and sliced scallions, and sauté gently until fragrant, creating a flavorful scallion oil. Be careful not to burn them.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the scallion oil is fragrant, add the cut fish cakes to the pan. Increase the heat to medium and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 4

Step 5

Pour in 1/2 cup of water. Add the sliced onion and chopped Cheongyang chili peppers, and continue to stir-fry until the onions become translucent.

Step 5

Step 6

Now, add all the seasoning ingredients: 4 Tbsp soy sauce, 3 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp sesame oil, 1/2 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds, and 1/4 tsp black pepper. Stir-fry over high heat until the sauce thickens and the fish cakes are well-coated and glossy. Your delicious Odeng Bokkeum is ready!
