Main Ingredients
  • 500g Tteokbokki rice cakes (use either wheat or rice cakes)
  • 7 sheets of square fish cakes (cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1L Anchovy broth (or water if unavailable)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, rinse the 500g of tteokbokki rice cakes in cold water and drain. If using rice cakes, soak them in warm water for about 10 minutes to soften. Cut the 7 sheets of square fish cakes into bite-sized pieces according to your preference.

Step 2

In a wide, deep pot, pour in 1L of anchovy broth. Add 2 Tbsp of gochujang, 3 Tbsp of soy sauce, and 2 Tbsp of sugar. Stir to combine the seasonings, then bring to a rolling boil over high heat.

Step 3

Once the broth is boiling, add the tteokbokki rice cakes first. This allows the rice cakes to cook and absorb the flavors of the sauce. Stir occasionally to prevent them from sticking to the bottom.

Step 4

As the rice cakes begin to soften, add 1 Tbsp of oyster sauce and mix well. Skim off any foam that rises to the surface while cooking; this will result in a clearer, cleaner broth.

Step 5

When the rice cakes float to the surface, add 1 Tbsp of minced garlic and continue to simmer. The pungent aroma of the garlic will infuse the broth, creating a richer flavor.

Step 6

Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for about 10 minutes, or until the tteokbokki broth has slightly reduced to your desired consistency. Once the broth is just right, add the cut square fish cakes and cook them together.

Step 7

Finally, generously sprinkle black pepper to your liking. The aromatic quality of the pepper will further enhance the overall flavor of the tteokbokki.

Step 8

Lower the heat to low and simmer for another 5 minutes. Your delicious soupy tteokbokki is ready! Feel free to add scallions or a boiled egg for an extra touch. Enjoy it while it’s hot!
