Main Ingredients

  • 5 sheets of flat fish cakes (approx. 250g)
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1/2 stalk of green onion (scallion)
  • 1 Korean green chili pepper (adjust to your spice preference)

Seasoning

  • 3 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp corn syrup (oligosaccharide)
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp cooking oil (optional)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the fish cakes. For flat fish cakes, roll them up like a sushi mat and slice them about 0.5cm thick. This ensures the sauce coats them evenly and makes them easier to eat. You can also cut them into bite-sized pieces for children.

Step 1

Step 2

Next, prepare the vegetables. Finely mince the Korean green chili pepper (removing seeds if you prefer less heat) to add a spicy kick. Slice the onion into strips similar in size to the fish cakes, or slightly smaller. Cut the green onion diagonally to add a fresh aroma.

Step 2

Step 3

In a wide pan, add the sliced fish cakes and onion. Pour in 3 Tbsp of soy sauce and 2 Tbsp of corn syrup. You can also add 1 Tbsp of cooking oil if desired. Stir-fry quickly over medium-high heat, ensuring the ingredients don’t burn, until the fish cakes are coated with the sauce.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the soy sauce mixture has slightly reduced, add about half a cup of water (approx. 100ml). Reduce the heat to medium and continue to stir-fry until the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency. Be careful not to let it dry out completely, as it can become too stiff.

Step 4

Step 5

When the sauce is nearly reduced, add the prepared green onion, 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic, and the minced Korean green chili pepper. At this stage, add the remaining corn syrup to balance the sweetness and spiciness.

Step 5

Step 6

Add all the ingredients together and stir-fry quickly over high heat for about 1 minute, allowing the sauce to meld with all the components. Turn off the heat and serve in a dish. Your delicious fish cake stir-fry is ready! It’s wonderful served hot and even better the next day as a classic Korean side dish.
