Main Ingredients- Tteokbokki rice cakes 2 handfuls (approx. 300g)
- Cabbage 2 handfuls (approx. 100g)
- Fish cakes (eomuk) 2 sheets
- Green onion 1/2 stalk
- Water 200ml (approx. 1 cup)
Spicy & Sweet Sauce- Won-dang (Korean raw sugar) or granulated sugar 2 Tbsp
- Gochujang (Korean chili paste) 5 Tbsp
- Won-dang (Korean raw sugar) or granulated sugar 2 Tbsp
- Gochujang (Korean chili paste) 5 Tbsp
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Rinse the frozen tteokbokki rice cakes under cold water several times to remove excess starch and prepare them. Soaking them briefly will make them softer and chewier.
Step 2
Cut the cabbage into 1cm thick pieces and the fish cakes into 2cm wide strips. Slice the green onion lengthwise into 3-4cm long pieces. (Note: The photo shows half a green onion used, but you can adjust the amount to your preference.)
Step 3
In a wide wok or pot, combine the rice cakes, sliced cabbage, fish cakes, and green onion. Add 2-3 Tbsp of canola oil or cooking oil and stir-fry over high heat for 1-2 minutes, just until everything is lightly coated and combined. Stir-frying the ingredients beforehand can add a deeper flavor.
Step 4
Now, let’s make the delicious sauce. Add 2 Tbsp of won-dang (or granulated sugar) and 5 Tbsp of gochujang to the wok. Pour in 200ml of water and stir well until the sauce is evenly mixed.
Step 5
After adding the sauce, reduce the heat to medium. Continue to cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally with chopsticks or a spatula to prevent the rice cakes from sticking to the bottom. The sauce should thicken, and the rice cakes will become glossy when it’s perfectly cooked.
Step 6
Your delicious tteokbokki, with its chewy rice cakes and crisp vegetables, is now ready! It’s best enjoyed hot. Feel free to serve it with boiled eggs, fried seaweed rolls (gimmari), or other toppings for an even more satisfying meal.
