Spicy and Sweet Braised Potatoes Recipe
Making Delicious Braised Potatoes for Side Dishes
I made a side dish with potatoes I bought. This is a simple and delicious way to prepare braised potatoes that will become a staple in your meal prep.
Main Ingredients- 4 potatoes (medium-sized)
- 3 Cheongyang peppers (Korean chili peppers)
Seasoning Ingredients- 50ml soy sauce (about 1/4 cup)
- 1 cup water (200ml)
- 1 Tbsp cooking syrup (or corn syrup)
- 1 Tbsp corn syrup
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds
- 50ml soy sauce (about 1/4 cup)
- 1 cup water (200ml)
- 1 Tbsp cooking syrup (or corn syrup)
- 1 Tbsp corn syrup
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, peel the 4 potatoes and cut them into bite-sized cubes. If they are too small, they might break apart during cooking, so aim for a moderate size.
Step 2
Rinse the cubed potatoes in cold water two to three times to remove excess starch. This helps the braising liquid adhere better to the potatoes and prevents the sauce from becoming too sticky. Place the rinsed potatoes directly into a pot.
Step 3
Add 1 cup (200ml) of water, enough to cover the potatoes. Pour in 50ml of soy sauce and 1 tablespoon of cooking syrup (or corn syrup) for sweetness. Bring this mixture to a boil over high heat. Feel free to adjust the soy sauce quantity to your preference.
Step 4
Prepare 3 Cheongyang peppers by thinly slicing them for a spicy kick. You can remove the seeds before slicing if you prefer a milder heat.
Step 5
Once the potatoes are about halfway cooked, add the sliced Cheongyang peppers to the pot and continue to simmer, allowing the flavors to meld together.
Step 6
Start by boiling over high heat. Once the liquid simmers, reduce the heat to medium. Stir occasionally to prevent the potatoes from sticking or breaking, and as the liquid begins to reduce, lower the heat to low to gently simmer until tender.
Step 7
Continue to braise for about 10-15 minutes, or until most of the liquid has evaporated and the potatoes are tender and glossy. You can check for doneness by piercing a potato with a chopstick; it should go in easily.
Step 8
Finally, add 1 tablespoon of corn syrup and stir quickly to coat the potatoes. The corn syrup will create a glaze, adding shine and a subtle sweetness.
Step 9
Turn off the heat, then drizzle in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of toasted sesame seeds to finish. The nutty aroma of sesame oil and the texture of the seeds enhance the flavor, completing your delicious braised potatoes!
