A Quick and Delicious Side Dish: Spicy Stir-Fried Fish Cakes
I made a batch of simple side dishes with a pack of fish cakes! This recipe is perfect for those times you want a flavorful and satisfying Korean banchan.
Main Ingredients- 5 sheets of fish cake (eomuk)
- 1/2 medium onion
- A small amount of green onion (about 1/4 stalk)
Seasoning- 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp cooking oil
- 1 Tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 Tbsp corn syrup or oligodang
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds
- 100ml water
- 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp cooking oil
- 1 Tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 Tbsp corn syrup or oligodang
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds
- 100ml water
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the 5 sheets of fish cake. You can cut them into long, rectangular strips, similar to those used for kimbap, or into bite-sized squares – it’s up to your preference. For a cleaner taste and texture, you can briefly blanch the fish cakes in boiling water to remove excess oil (optional).
Step 2
Slice the onion into thin strips. Cut the green onion diagonally. Using the green parts as well will add a nice color and flavor to the dish.
Step 3
In a deep pan or wok, heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil over low heat. Add 1 teaspoon of minced garlic and sauté until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic, as this can make the dish bitter.
Step 4
Once the garlic is fragrant, add the prepared fish cakes, onion, and green onion to the pan. Increase the heat to medium and stir-fry everything together. Ensure the fish cakes and vegetables are well coated with the oil.
Step 5
Next, pour in 100ml of water. Adding a little water at this stage helps prevent the seasonings from burning and allows them to be absorbed evenly by the ingredients.
Step 6
Add 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce and 1 tablespoon of corn syrup (or oligodang). Stir well to combine with the ingredients. Oyster sauce adds a savory depth of flavor, while corn syrup provides a pleasant sweetness and a glossy finish.
Step 7
Now, sprinkle 1 tablespoon of red pepper flakes evenly over the mixture. Stir-fry quickly to coat the fish cakes and vegetables with the spicy seasoning. Adjusting the heat properly will prevent burning and achieve a beautiful color.
Step 8
Once the seasoning has evenly coated the ingredients, your delicious spicy stir-fried fish cakes are almost ready. You’ll see the vibrant red sauce coating the fish cakes beautifully.
Step 9
Just before turning off the heat, drizzle in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil for a nutty aroma, and sprinkle 1 teaspoon of toasted sesame seeds. This completes your spicy and savory stir-fried fish cakes! Serve hot over a bowl of rice for a delightful meal.
