Mandu-guk Ingredients- 10 frozen dumplings (water dumplings)
- 5 cups broth (anchovy-kelp or homemade natural broth)
- 1 Tbsp fish sauce or soy sauce
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp chopped green onions
- Pinch of black pepper
- 1 drop sesame oil (for finishing)
- 1 egg
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the base for our delicious dumpling soup: the broth. You can use a simple anchovy-kelp broth, or for a deeper flavor, I’ve prepared a special broth by simmering shrimp heads, natural seasoning ingredients, scallion roots, and dried shiitake mushroom stems in a broth bag. Aim for about 5 cups (approximately 1 liter) of broth.
Step 2
Now, it’s time to prepare the star of our soup: the frozen dumplings! Take the dumplings directly from the freezer. Using them frozen without thawing helps them maintain their shape and prevents them from becoming mushy when cooked.
Step 3
Next, we’ll prepare the aromatics that will enhance the flavor of the dumpling soup. Have 1 teaspoon of minced garlic and 2 tablespoons of finely chopped green onions ready. These ingredients will add a refreshing and clean taste to your soup.
Step 4
Once the broth is at a rolling boil, carefully add the frozen dumplings. As the dumplings begin to cook and float to the surface, season the soup with a pinch of black pepper and 1 tablespoon of fish sauce or soy sauce. You can also add salt to taste if needed. At this point, add the minced garlic and chopped green onions to infuse the soup with their wonderful aroma and flavor.
Step 5
When the dumplings are fully cooked and floating, it’s time for the final touch. Lightly beat one egg in a small bowl. Gently drizzle the beaten egg into the boiling soup in a circular motion. The egg will cook into beautiful, wispy ribbons. Finish with just a drop of sesame oil for a lovely aroma, and your delicious dumpling soup is ready!
Step 6
Here you have it – a refreshing and delicious dumpling soup made in a super-speedy time using frozen dumplings! The warm broth is incredibly satisfying, making it perfect for breakfast, a quick snack, or especially on a cool day. Serve it alongside some tangy dongchimi (radish kimchi) for a complete and delightful meal. Enjoy!
