Main Ingredients

  • 1/2 medium Onion
  • 1/2 stalk Green Onion
  • 1 Green Chili Pepper (optional, for extra spice)
  • 1 can (200g) Spam or similar canned processed ham

Seasoning

  • 1 Tbsp Coarse Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes for color and flavor)
  • 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Begin by peeling and thinly slicing the half onion into strips. Aim for about 0.5cm thickness. This ensures a pleasant texture when stir-fried.

Step 1

Step 2

Wash the green onion thoroughly, separating the white and green parts. Chop it into roughly 1cm pieces. The green onion will add a subtle sweetness and aroma to the dish.

Step 2

Step 3

Wash the green chili pepper, remove the stem, and finely chop it. If you prefer a spicier kick, you can leave the seeds in.

Step 3

Step 4

Open the can of Spam and remove the contents. Using a fork, mash the Spam into bite-sized pieces. Avoid mashing it too finely; some texture will make it more enjoyable.

Step 4

Step 5

Heat a non-stick pan over medium-high heat without any oil. Add the mashed Spam and stir-fry until it turns golden brown and releases its own fat. This step enhances its savory flavor.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the Spam has rendered some fat, add the sliced onion, chopped green onion, and coarse gochugaru. Continue to stir-fry over medium-high heat until the onions become translucent and the ingredients are well combined. Be careful not to burn the gochugaru.

Step 6

Step 7

When the onions are softened and the mixture is fragrant, add the minced garlic and chopped green chili pepper. Stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes until everything is cooked through and the flavors meld together. Your delicious Spam Soboro is ready! Serve it over a bowl of warm rice for a satisfying meal, or let it cool to use as a filling for gimbap.
