Spam & Rice Cake Skewers (Seutteok Seutteok)
How to Make ‘Seutteok Seutteok’ from ‘Bab Bless You’: An incredibly easy Spam recipe
We’ve recreated Choi Hwa-jung’s ‘Seutteok Seutteok’ from the popular show ‘Bab Bless You’.
Ingredients- 12 pieces of Tteokbokki rice cakes or garaetteok (long cylinder rice cakes)
- 1 can (200g) of canned Spam
- A pinch of dried parsley flakes (for garnish)
Optional Ingredient- Honey, to taste
- Honey, to taste
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare all the ingredients for the dish. The number of rice cakes and Spam pieces to skewer will depend on the size of your skewers. The handled skewers I bought from Daiso were perfectly sized for 3 rice cakes and 3 Spam pieces each. Adjust the quantity based on the skewers you are using.
Step 2
If your tteokbokki rice cakes are stuck together, separate them one by one. Using soft, fresh rice cakes from a local rice cake shop will make them even more delicious.
Step 3
Cut the canned Spam into pieces similar in size to the rice cakes. To reduce saltiness and achieve a softer texture, briefly blanch the Spam in boiling water. After blanching, make sure to drain it thoroughly. Blanching the Spam removes excess salt, making it more enjoyable for everyone.
Step 4
Now, thread the rice cakes and Spam onto the skewers, alternating between them. Arranging them in the order of ‘rice cake – Spam – rice cake – Spam – rice cake – Spam’ looks appealing and makes them easy to eat. If you’re putting the rice cake on the skewer first, lightly oiling the skewer will help prevent the soft rice cake from tearing. If you start with the Spam, you don’t need to oil the skewer, as the Spam’s natural oils help the rice cake slide on smoothly. If your rice cakes are hard, soak them in warm water for a few minutes until they soften before skewering. This will prevent them from cracking.
Step 5
Place the assembled Spam and rice cake skewers (‘Seutteok Seutteok’) onto a preheated pan without any oil. Grill them until they are golden brown on both sides. The natural oils from the Spam will be sufficient to cook them, resulting in a crispy exterior and a chewy interior.
Step 6
Once the ‘Seutteok Seutteok’ is nicely grilled, sprinkle a pinch of parsley flakes over the top for a decorative touch. The fragrant parsley will enhance the overall flavor.
Step 7
And there you have it – delicious ‘Seutteok Seutteok’! These crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside Spam rice cake skewers are perfect as a special snack or even as an accompaniment to a cold drink.
