  • Cooking : Pan-fry
  • Servings : 1 serving
  • Cooking Time : Within 10 minutes

Bento Ingredients

  • 3 slices of low-sodium Spam
  • 1 bowl of cooked rice
  • 1/3 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 1/4 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 pinch of salt

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the Spam. Since we’re making one serving, slice the Spam into 3 pieces, about 1 cm thick. Don’t throw away the can the Spam came in; set it aside. We’ll use it as a mold for the Spam Musubi later.

Step 1

Step 2

Heat a frying pan over medium heat. Place the sliced Spam in the pan and grill until golden brown. You don’t need to add oil, as the Spam itself will release enough fat for a delicious fry. Cook slowly over medium heat rather than high heat.

Step 2

Step 3

In a bowl, combine 1 bowl of warm cooked rice with 1/3 Tbsp sesame oil, 1/4 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds, and a pinch of salt. Gently mix with a spatula until well combined, ensuring the rice grains don’t clump together. This creates the flavorful seasoned rice.

Step 3

Step 4

Clean the empty Spam can you saved. Line the inside of the can generously with plastic wrap. Then, fill the can about halfway with the seasoned rice. Lightly press the rice down, just enough to shape it within the mold, without compacting it too tightly.

Step 4

Step 5

Place a piece of the cooked Spam on top of the rice inside the can. The Spam slice should fit almost perfectly with the rice. Layering the rice and Spam this way forms the basic structure of the Spam Musubi.

Step 5

Step 6

Cut a sheet of nori (seaweed) into a strip wide enough to wrap around the Spam Musubi. Wrap the seaweed strip around the combined rice and Spam to secure its shape. Make sure to wrap it snugly so it doesn’t come undone.

Step 6

Step 7

Carefully remove the Spam Musubi from the mold. Wrapping each piece individually in plastic wrap makes them very convenient for packing into a bento box or for taking on the go. This keeps your hands clean when eating.

Step 7

Step 8

Arrange the completed Spam Musubi neatly in a bento box. Add colorful fruits or vegetables alongside for a visually appealing and nutritionally balanced meal. Consider adding a cute bento pick to delight your child even more!
