Spam and Gim (Seaweed) Rolled Omelette
Spam Omelette Recipe: A Delicious Side Dish with Spam and Seaweed
A delightful rolled omelette made with leftover Spam, offering a savory flavor and a hint of seaweed goodness. Perfect for a quick meal or as an appealing snack.
Ingredients- 8 large eggs
- Spam (to your preference) – a small amount
- 1 packet of seasoned roasted seaweed (gim)
- 1/4 carrot
- 1/2 bunch scallions (green onions)
- Salt to taste (approx. pinch)
- Cooking oil (for frying)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Begin by preparing 8 fresh eggs. Using fresh eggs will contribute to a smoother and more tender texture in your rolled omelette.
Step 2
Whisk the eggs thoroughly. Using a hand blender can help achieve a smoother consistency, ensuring the egg mixture is well combined.
Step 3
Allow the blended egg mixture to rest for a moment. This lets any air bubbles naturally dissipate, resulting in a smoother, more uniform omelette.
Step 4
Cut the Spam into thick, baton-like strips. Briefly blanching the Spam in hot water helps to remove excess grease, making it less oily and more palatable.
Step 5
Finely chop the scallions. You can use scissors for a quicker and easier cut. The fresh, mild onion flavor of scallions adds a nice zest to the omelette.
Step 6
Finely mince the carrot. The small pieces of carrot will add a touch of sweetness and a vibrant color to the omelette.
Step 7
Prepare the seasoned roasted seaweed (gim). You can use pre-cut sheets for convenience. The savory and slightly salty flavor of the seaweed complements the eggs beautifully.
Step 8
In a bowl, combine the beaten eggs with the chopped scallions, minced carrot, and a pinch of salt. Mix everything well. Adjust the saltiness to your liking.
Step 9
Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat. Add a tablespoon of cooking oil, then gently wipe the pan with a paper towel to create a thin, even layer of oil. This prevents sticking.
Step 10
Pour a thin layer of the egg mixture into the heated pan. Aim for an even coating that forms a thin omelette base. A thinner layer allows for easier rolling and ensures even cooking.
Step 11
When the egg layer is about halfway set (still slightly moist on top), carefully lay a sheet of seaweed over the entire surface. Gently press down to help it adhere to the egg.
Step 12
Once the egg is mostly cooked, place the blanched Spam strips along one edge of the omelette. Carefully start rolling the omelette from the edge with the Spam, incorporating the seaweed as you go. Roll it tightly but gently to avoid tearing.
Step 13
Slide the rolled omelette to one side of the pan. Add a tiny bit more oil to the empty space and wipe it with a paper towel. This prepares the pan for the next layer.
Step 14
Pour another thin layer of egg mixture into the empty space of the pan. Once it’s partially set, lift the previously rolled omelette and place it over the new layer, then continue rolling. Repeat this process, adding layers of egg and rolling, until you achieve your desired thickness.
Step 15
Once the omelette has reached your desired size, gently roll it around the pan over medium-low heat to ensure all sides are evenly cooked and lightly golden.
Step 16
While the omelette is still hot, carefully transfer it to a sheet of parchment paper. Tightly roll the omelette within the paper to shape it. This helps to set its form and makes it easier to slice.
Step 17
Allow the rolled omelette, still wrapped in parchment paper, to rest. You can place the warm pan on top of the wrapped omelette for a few minutes to help it firm up. Using a bamboo sushi mat also works well for shaping.
Step 18
To achieve clean cuts, heat a knife blade briefly over a flame (use caution!). A hot knife will slice through the omelette without smearing or tearing.
Step 19
Using the heated knife, slice the rolled omelette into even pieces. You’ll notice the cuts are very clean, showcasing the layers of egg, Spam, and seaweed.
Step 20
Arrange the sliced omelette pieces on a serving plate. Your delicious Spam and Gim rolled omelette is ready!
Step 21
Enjoy this flavorful and satisfying Spam and Gim rolled omelette!
