Main Ingredients

  • 1 block firm tofu (for pan-frying or stew)
  • 1 medium onion
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil (or cooking oil)
  • A pinch of sesame seeds (for garnish)

Seasoning Sauce Ingredients

  • 1 red chili pepper (dried or fresh)
  • 1 green chili pepper (e.g., Cheongyang or regular)
  • 1/2 stalk green onion (scallion)
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • A pinch of black pepper

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Begin by preparing all your ingredients. Wash and rinse them thoroughly. Pat the tofu dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.

Step 1

Step 2

Cut the tofu into thick slices, about 1.5 to 2 cm (around 0.6 to 0.8 inches) thick. Gently press the slices with paper towels to absorb any remaining water. This step is crucial to prevent the tofu from breaking apart during cooking and to minimize oil splatter.

Step 2

Step 3

Peel and thinly julienne the onion. Finely mince the red and green chili peppers to add a pleasant heat. Chop the green onion finely; these will form the base of your flavorful sauce.

Step 3

Step 4

In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, gochugaru, minced garlic, sesame oil, black pepper, and 2 tablespoons of water. Whisk everything together to create a delicious seasoning sauce. Adding a little water helps the sauce blend smoothly.

Step 4

Step 5

Heat 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Carefully place the tofu slices in a single layer and pan-fry them until golden brown and slightly firm on both sides. This searing step helps the tofu hold its shape beautifully when braised.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the tofu is nicely browned, add the julienned onions to the side of the pan and sauté them briefly until they release their aroma. Then, pour the prepared seasoning sauce evenly over the tofu.

Step 6

Step 7

Reduce the heat to medium-low and let the stew simmer gently. Baste the tofu with the sauce periodically to ensure it absorbs all the flavors. Continue simmering until the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency, allowing the tofu to become tender and flavorful.

Step 7

Step 8

Transfer the braised tofu stew to a serving plate. Garnish generously with the sautéed onions, minced chilies, and chopped green onion. Finally, sprinkle with sesame seeds for a finishing touch. Your delicious and visually appealing Tofu Stew with Onions is now ready to be enjoyed!
