Oatmeal Topping Cubes

  • 30g Quick Rolled Oats
  • 270ml Water

Sweet Pumpkin Porridge

  • 1 cube 9x Rice Porridge
  • 1 cube Sweet Pumpkin

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Oatmeal makes a fantastic topping for baby food and is incredibly simple to make using quick rolled oats. Quick rolled oats have smaller, thinner flakes than regular oats, resulting in shorter cooking times and a softer texture.

Step 1

Step 2

While quick oats are naturally soft, for babies in the early puree stage who may have difficulty swallowing lumps, we’ve blended them in a mixer to ensure a smoother consistency. This makes it much easier for your baby to digest.

Step 2

Step 3

Since your baby is currently eating 9x concentrated rice porridge, we’ve matched the oatmeal topping to the same consistency. The ratio of oats to water is 1:9. Specifically, prepare 30g of quick rolled oats with 270ml of water.

Step 3

Step 4

In a dedicated baby food pot, combine the blended quick oats and the prepared water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

Step 4

Step 5

Unlike rice, oatmeal can easily stick to the bottom of the pot. It’s crucial to stir continuously with a spatula from the beginning to the end while cooking to prevent sticking. Be diligent!

Step 5

Step 6

Quick oats don’t require a long cooking time like rice grains. Once the oatmeal and water mixture starts to boil, it’s almost done. It has the advantage of being quick to prepare.

Step 6

Step 7

When the mixture comes to a boil, reduce the heat to low. Continue to stir gently and simmer until it reaches your desired consistency. Patience is key to achieving the perfect thickness.

Step 7

Step 8

My baby eats slightly thicker purees well, so I made it to a consistency where it holds its shape slightly when scooped with a spatula and falls slowly with a slight delay. Adjust the thickness according to your baby’s age and eating habits.

Step 8

Step 9

Once the oatmeal porridge is cooked, let it cool slightly. Then, divide it into 10g portions in baby food cube trays and freeze. Making them into cubes like this makes them convenient for serving one portion at a time.

Step 9

Step 10

After flash freezing in the freezer, the oatmeal cubes were solidly frozen within a few hours. Freezing them firmly makes them easier to remove from the trays later.

Step 10

Step 11

Place the firmly frozen oatmeal topping cubes onto Glad Magic Wrap (plastic wrap), ensuring there’s some space between each cube.

Step 11

Step 12

Cover the cubes with the wrap, then roll it up tightly once, and twist both ends like a pretzel to secure them. This prevents the cubes from sticking together and keeps them individually separated.

Step 12

Step 13

You can also twist the wrap in between the cubes, similar to a candy necklace, which looks cute and makes them easy to take out.

Step 13

Step 14

Store the wrapped oatmeal cubes in a zip-top bag or airtight container in the freezer. When storing, be sure to label the type of cube (e.g., Oatmeal, Sweet Pumpkin), the date made, and the portion size (e.g., 10g). This will make it much easier to identify and use them when preparing meals.

Step 14

Step 15

The biggest advantage of cube topping purees is the ability to mix and match various cubes to create diverse menus every day! While babies often eat the same food well, it can become a bit monotonous for the parent preparing the meals. So today, I made sweet pumpkin porridge.

Step 15

Step 16

Simply combine the pre-made 9x rice porridge cubes and sweet pumpkin cubes in a baby food pot and heat them up – the sweet pumpkin porridge is complete! It’s truly that simple.

Step 16

Step 17

Since the puree is for immediate consumption, we quickly cooled it by placing the pot in an ice bath. This helps minimize nutrient loss and maintain hygiene.

Step 17

Step 18

Thaw the oatmeal topping and bok choy, which will be served as side dishes. The oatmeal cubes can be thawed by soaking in lukewarm water or by briefly microwaving.

Step 18

Step 19

Top the finished sweet pumpkin porridge with the prepared oatmeal topping and bok choy. This beautifully presented and delicious sweet pumpkin porridge is complete! My baby absolutely loved this colorful and sweet porridge today.
