  • 1/3 paper cup hot water (about 60ml)
  • Pinch of salt

  • 1/3 paper cup water (about 60ml)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine the glutinous rice flour (120g) and a pinch of salt. Gradually add the hot water (about 60ml or 1/3 paper cup) while mixing with a spatula or your hands until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more glutinous rice flour; if it’s too dry, add a tiny bit more water until it becomes smooth and pliable. Once the dough is ready, roll it into small, bite-sized balls, about the size of a small bean or your preferred size (around 1.5cm is good).

Step 2

Fill a pot with plenty of water and bring it to a rolling boil. Carefully drop the shaped rice cake dough balls into the boiling water. They will float to the surface as they cook. Let them boil for another 2-3 minutes to ensure they are cooked through. Using a slotted spoon or sieve, remove the cooked rice cakes and briefly rinse them under cold water. This helps prevent them from sticking together and enhances their chewy texture. Drain them well and pat them dry with paper towels or a clean cloth.

Step 3

In a separate pan, combine the sauce ingredients: brown sugar (about 50g or 1/3 paper cup) and water (about 60ml or 1/3 paper cup). Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar has completely dissolved and the mixture has thickened into a syrup-like consistency. This should take about 2-3 minutes. Be careful not to overcook, as it can burn.

Step 4

Place the chewy, cooked rice cakes in a serving dish. Pour the warm, sweet brown sugar sauce evenly over the rice cakes. For an extra touch, you can sprinkle some sesame seeds on top.
