Main Ingredients- 300g Tofu (about 1 block)
- Potato starch (or cornstarch) – as needed
- Vegetable oil – as needed
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Here are the ingredients for our delicious tofu steak! Prepare the sauce and garnish as well. (Make sure to have plenty of potato starch and vegetable oil!)
Step 2
The key to a great tofu steak is removing moisture! Wrap the tofu in paper towels or a clean kitchen cloth and press firmly to squeeze out as much water as possible. This step helps the tofu firm up, making it easier to cook.
Step 3
Let it sit for at least 2 hours, pressing down with a heavy object, or extend the time if you want to ensure maximum water removal. This allows the tofu to become firmer. You can also use a tofu press or place heavy pots on top.
Step 4
Now, let’s make the steak sauce. In a small bowl, combine 1.5 Tbsp mayonnaise, 1.5 Tbsp oyster sauce, and 1 tsp sugar. Stir well until the sugar dissolves. Having the sauce ready beforehand makes assembly quick and easy.
Step 5
Cut the pressed tofu into your desired size and thickness. Typically, cutting them into bite-sized pieces or slightly thick steaks works well. Avoid cutting them too thin, as they might break apart easily. Aim for a moderate thickness.
Step 6
Coat each piece of tofu evenly on all sides with potato starch. The starch coating will help the tofu become crispy when fried and also holds its shape.
Step 7
Heat a generous amount of vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. The oil needs to be sufficiently hot for the tofu to fry evenly without sticking and develop a golden-brown color. You’ll be pan-frying, so don’t be shy with the oil.
Step 8
Carefully place the starch-coated tofu pieces into the heated oil. Make sure to leave some space between the pieces so they don’t stick together.
Step 9
Fry each side for about 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Patience is key here to achieve that delightful crispy exterior and tender interior texture.
Step 10
Once the tofu is nicely browned, pour the prepared sauce into the pan. Alternatively, you can place the fried tofu on a plate and drizzle the sauce over it. Cook over medium-low heat for just 1-2 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
Step 11
Finally, garnish with a sprinkle of chopped green onions, if desired. Serve immediately while warm to enjoy the perfect crispy outside and tender inside tofu steak. Enjoy your meal!
