Ingredients
  • 6 slices of bread (thick slices work best)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 300ml milk (or heavy cream)
  • Butter (generous amount)
  • 2 pinches of salt
  • Sugar (to taste)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, crack 3 large eggs into a bowl. Whisk them thoroughly with a fork or whisk until the whites and yolks are well combined and any stringy bits are broken up. A good ratio to remember is about 1 egg per 2 slices of bread.

Step 2

For an even smoother and more uniformly textured French toast, consider straining the beaten egg mixture through a fine-mesh sieve. This removes any remaining chalazae (egg white strands) for a cleaner taste and texture.

Step 3

To the whisked eggs, add 2 pinches of salt for seasoning. Then, pour in 300ml of milk. (Think of it as roughly 100ml of milk per 2 slices of bread.) If you desire extra richness, you can substitute heavy cream for milk. Some people also add sugar directly to the egg mixture for added sweetness; feel free to do so if you prefer. I personally prefer to sprinkle sugar on top later, but adjust to your taste!

Step 4

Gently stir the milk and eggs together, taking care not to create too much foam. A smooth, well-blended custard is key.

Step 5

Prepare your bread slices for dipping. While you can cook them whole, cutting them in half makes them easier to handle and allows you to cook more at once. Now, dip each slice into the egg mixture, ensuring it’s fully soaked on both sides. Be careful not to leave them submerged for too long, as the bread can become soggy and tear. The goal is for the bread to absorb the custard while retaining some structure.

Step 6

Melt a generous amount of butter in a frying pan over medium-low heat. It’s important to control the heat to prevent the butter from burning.

Step 7

Place the egg-soaked bread slices into the preheated pan and cook until golden brown on both sides. The most crucial tip here is to maintain a ‘medium-low’ heat. Cooking on high heat will burn the outside while leaving the inside undercooked. Patience is key for a perfectly golden French toast.

Step 8

Once your French toast is beautifully golden, dust it generously with powdered sugar for a beautiful, snow-like appearance and added sweetness. If you don’t have powdered sugar, regular granulated sugar sprinkled on top works wonderfully too. The sweetness is a defining characteristic of French toast, so don’t skip it! For an extra touch of flavor and aroma, consider a light sprinkle of cinnamon powder to enhance the taste even further.
