Simple Steamed Whiteleg Shrimp: A Perfect Recipe to Capture the Sweetness
How to Steam Whiteleg Shrimp Deliciously: Steaming Time, Preparation, and Tips!
It seems the shrimp season has arrived! Today, I’ll share a recipe for ‘Steamed Shrimp’ using the fresh Whiteleg shrimp I pre-ordered from the local mart. When shrimp are at their freshest, steaming them is the best way to savor their natural flavors. Let’s get started on this delightfully plump and sweet steamed shrimp dish!
Essential Ingredients- 1 pack Fresh Whiteleg Shrimp (approx. 300-400g)
- 1L Water (for steaming)
- 3 Tbsp Sake or Mirin
- 3 Tbsp Coarse Salt (for washing shrimp)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, it’s important to thoroughly wash the fresh Whiteleg shrimp under running water. In a bowl, dissolve 3 tablespoons of coarse salt in about 1 liter of cold water. Gently swirl the shrimp in this saltwater solution to help remove impurities. Afterward, rinse them a couple more times under cold running water and drain well.
Step 2
Carefully trim the sharp rostrum (beak) and long antennae near the shrimp’s head using kitchen scissors. This makes them safer and more pleasant to eat. It’s also a good idea to remove the dark vein (intestine) along the shrimp’s back using a toothpick for a cleaner taste. (This step is optional).
Step 3
Now, let’s prepare the steamer. Pour a generous amount of 1 liter of water into the bottom of the steamer pot. Add 3 tablespoons of sake or mirin to eliminate any fishy odors and enhance the flavor, resulting in a more aromatic steamed shrimp dish. The steamer should be ready with rising steam before you add the shrimp.
Step 4
Arrange the prepared shrimp in a single layer on the steaming rack over the rising steam. Avoid overcrowding the rack, as this ensures the shrimp cook evenly. Cover with the lid and steam over high heat for about 8-10 minutes. The steaming time may vary slightly depending on the size of the shrimp.
Step 5
Your delicious steamed shrimp will be ready when they turn a vibrant red color! Be careful not to over-steam, as this can make the shrimp dry and tough. Keep an eye on the color to ensure they are cooked perfectly. Serve the hot, steaming shrimp immediately. They are delicious dipped in soy sauce with a touch of wasabi or a simple soy-based dipping sauce!
