Simple & Soft French Toast
How to Make Tender French Toast Using Leftover Bread
Don’t let that leftover bread go to waste! Here’s a recipe for incredibly simple, soft, and delicious French toast. It’s perfect as a snack for kids or a quick meal for yourself. I’ll share the golden ratio for crispy edges and a moist interior!
Main Ingredients- 1 small loaf of bread (approx. 6-8 slices)
- 6 fresh eggs
- 100ml milk (about half a paper cup)
Seasonings & Others- 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 3 Tbsp sunflower oil (or cooking oil/butter)
- A pinch of parsley flakes (optional)
- 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 3 Tbsp sunflower oil (or cooking oil/butter)
- A pinch of parsley flakes (optional)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare a wide bowl. Crack 6 fresh eggs into it. Whisking the yolks and whites together will result in a more tender texture.
Step 2
Add 2 tablespoons of sugar and 100ml of milk (about half a paper cup) to the bowl with the eggs. Use a whisk or fork to stir thoroughly until the eggs, sugar, and milk are completely combined and no lumps remain. This egg mixture is key to the moistness of your French toast.
Step 3
Now, it’s time to prepare the star of your French toast: the bread. Using slightly stale or leftover bread will yield the best results. If your bread is too hard, you can lightly mist it with water or milk to soften it before using. (Pro Tip: Store leftover bread in an airtight container in the freezer and thaw it before use for a fresh taste!)
Step 4
Dip the bread slices into the prepared egg mixture, ensuring both sides are thoroughly coated. Let the bread soak for about 30 seconds to 1 minute per side, allowing the egg mixture to fully absorb. This ensures a consistently moist and delicious French toast.
Step 5
Heat 3 tablespoons of sunflower oil in a non-stick pan over medium-low heat. Carefully place the egg-soaked bread slices into the pan. It’s crucial to cook over medium-low heat! High heat will burn the outside while leaving the inside undercooked. Cook slowly over gentle heat, adjusting as needed to prevent burning.
Step 6
Once both sides of the bread are golden brown and beautifully cooked, your French toast is ready! Slice the French toast in half and arrange it nicely on a plate. You can elevate the flavor further by serving it with powdered sugar, maple syrup, honey, or fresh fruit. A sprinkle of parsley flakes adds a lovely touch both visually and in taste. This is a fantastic option for a simple breakfast or a delightful children’s snack, so be sure to give it a try!
