Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the perfect topping: the fried eggs. Heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Crack 2 eggs into the pan and fry them sunny-side up, aiming for a runny yolk. Be gentle to keep the yolks intact. You can lightly tilt the pan to help the egg whites cook evenly.
Step 2
In a large mixing bowl (yangpun) or a wide serving bowl, tear the fresh lettuce (about 70g) into bite-sized pieces. The fresh, crisp lettuce is the star of this dish, offering a wonderful contrast in texture and a burst of freshness.
Step 3
Add the warm cooked rice (2 servings, approximately 400g) on top of the lettuce. Gently spread the rice so it doesn’t clump together.
Step 4
Now, let’s make the flavorful sauce. Drizzle 2 tablespoons of soy sauce over the rice. This forms the savory base of our bibimbap sauce.
Step 5
Add 1.5 tablespoons of corn syrup (or honey) for a touch of sweetness and a beautiful glaze. If you don’t have corn syrup, sugar can be used as a substitute, though corn syrup provides a smoother sweetness.
Step 6
Next, add 1 tablespoon of rice wine (mirin). Mirin adds a subtle depth of flavor and helps to balance the other ingredients, while also reducing any ‘eggy’ smell from the rice.
Step 7
For that characteristic Korean spice, add 1.5 tablespoons of gochujang. Feel free to adjust this amount based on your spice tolerance – add more if you like it hot, or less if you prefer it milder. It’s always best to taste and adjust!
Step 8
Incorporate 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise. The creamy mayonnaise mellows out the spiciness of the gochujang and adds a delightful richness to the sauce.
Step 9
Drizzle in 2 tablespoons of sesame oil. The nutty aroma of sesame oil is essential for authentic Korean flavors and will greatly enhance the overall taste.
Step 10
Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds over the ingredients. For an extra burst of nutty flavor, you can lightly crush the seeds between your palms before adding them.
Step 11
Finally, add about 1 cup of roasted seaweed flakes (gim-garu), measured using a standard paper cup. This adds a wonderful savory crunch and umami flavor.
Step 12
Carefully place the prepared sunny-side-up eggs on top of the bibimbap. Your delicious and vibrant Yangpun Lettuce Bibimbap is now complete! Mix everything together thoroughly with chopsticks or a spoon before enjoying. This is a fantastic dish to satisfy your appetite, especially on days when you’re craving something light yet flavorful.
