Simple Homemade Apple Jam
Transforming Less-Than-Perfect Apples into Delicious Homemade Jam
Don’t let slightly bland apples go to waste! This recipe turns them into a delightful homemade apple jam. It’s simple to make and perfect for spreading on toast, as a yogurt topping, or even as a filling for pastries.
Ingredients
- 7 Apples (medium size)
- 500ml Sugar (or adjust to taste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, peel the 7 apples thoroughly. Remove the core and seeds, then chop them into small, manageable pieces. Cutting them into reasonably small chunks will ensure a better texture in the final jam.
Step 2
Place the chopped apples into a food processor and pulse until finely chopped. You can also use a blender, but a food processor will give you a slightly chunkier texture, which many prefer in jam. Aim for a finely chopped consistency, but with some small pieces still discernible.
Step 3
Transfer all the chopped apples into a wide, deep pot (a wok is recommended). Place it over medium heat and begin to cook. Using a pot that’s large enough will prevent the jam from boiling over.
Step 4
As the apples cook, you’ll notice them releasing their natural juices and starting to soften after about 5 minutes. This is when the apples begin to break down.
Step 5
Once the apples have released enough liquid, add the 500ml of sugar. The amount of sugar can be adjusted based on the sweetness of your apples and your personal preference. For longer shelf life, you might consider slightly increasing the sugar.
Step 6
Stir the sugar into the apples until well combined. The mixture will become much more voluminous as the sugar dissolves. Start by boiling over medium-high heat, then reduce to medium-low once it starts to bubble vigorously. Simmer gently, stirring frequently to prevent sticking or burning.
Step 7
Continue to simmer over medium-low heat for about 20 to 30 minutes, or until the jam has reached a thick consistency. Keep stirring to prevent the jam from sticking to the bottom of the pot and to ensure even cooking.
Step 8
To check if the jam is ready, place a small spoonful of jam into a glass of cold water. If the jam holds its shape and doesn’t spread out, it’s done. If it spreads, continue simmering for a few more minutes and test again.
Step 9
While the jam is cooking, sterilize your glass jars. Place them in boiling water for about 10 minutes and then allow them to dry completely. It’s important that the jars are hot when you fill them with hot jam to prevent thermal shock.
Step 10
Carefully spoon the hot, finished apple jam into the sterilized jars. Fill smaller jars for immediate consumption and larger jars for longer storage. Seal them tightly. Refrigerate after opening and enjoy your delicious homemade apple jam!
