- 1 onion
- 1 egg
- 100mL water
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce-based sauce (teriyaki sauce or tsuyu)

Cooking Instructions

Step 2
First, prepare the flat fish cakes by cutting them into bite-sized pieces. Typically, you can cut them in half vertically, then slice into 2cm intervals. Peel the onion and slice it thinly into about 0.5cm thick pieces.
Step 3
Gently crack the egg into a bowl. Lightly beat it just enough to combine the yolk and white – avoid over-beating.
Step 4
Heat a deep frying pan over high heat for 3 minutes. Add 1 Tbsp of cooking oil, then add the sliced onion and stir-fry for about 2 minutes until it becomes translucent. Once the onion is slightly softened, add the fish cakes and stir-fry together. Then, pour in 100mL of water.
Step 5
Now it’s time to season. Add 2 Tbsp of teriyaki sauce (or tsuyu), 1 tsp of minced garlic, and 1/3 tsp of black pepper. Stir well to combine. Since fish cakes are already seasoned, taste the mixture before adding any extra salt or soy sauce to adjust the seasoning carefully. The teriyaki sauce here adds flavor without excessive sweetness; you can substitute it with tsuyu.
Step 6
Once the sauce starts to coat the fish cakes, gently pour the lightly beaten egg mixture around the edges of the pan. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook gently for about 3 minutes until the egg is softly set and still moist. The key is to turn off the heat before the egg is fully cooked through.
Step 7
Serve the warm rice in a bowl, presenting it nicely. Generously top the rice with the cooked fish cake and egg mixture. Finally, sprinkle a handful of bonito flakes and a pinch of sesame seeds for a simple yet elegant fish cake donburi, easily made at home.
Step 8
The savory fish cakes and tender egg meld beautifully with the rice, creating a truly delightful flavor. With simple ingredients and an incredibly easy cooking process, this dish is highly recommended for busy individuals or as a go-to meal for those living alone.
