Main Ingredients

  • 1 can (200g) Spam
  • 1/4 block Tofu (approx. 100g)
  • 5-6 Shiso leaves (Perilla leaves)
  • 1 sheet Gim (Seaweed for kimbap)

Seasoning

  • 0.5 tsp Soy sauce or Gganjang (crab sauce)
  • 1 Tbsp Sesame oil
  • 1 Tbsp Toasted sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Slice the Spam and tofu into uniform pieces, about 1cm thick. Lightly grease a pan or heat it, then pan-fry until golden brown. Drain excess oil from the Spam. If desired, gently press out excess water from the tofu before frying for a firmer texture.

Step 1

Step 2

Wash the fresh Shiso leaves thoroughly and pat them dry. Cut each leaf in half lengthwise along the center stem.

Step 2

Step 3

Don’t discard the empty Spam can! Wash it thoroughly. Line the inside of the can with plastic wrap, ensuring there’s enough overhang on the sides to help you easily lift out the musubi later.

Step 3

Step 4

Cut the fried tofu in half to match the size of the fried Spam slices.

Step 4

Step 5

In a bowl, combine warm cooked rice with 0.5 tsp soy sauce (or Gganjang), 1 Tbsp sesame oil, and 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds. Mix well to create seasoned rice. Press this seasoned rice into the bottom of the Spam can liner.

Step 5

Step 6

Layer the fried Spam slices on top of the rice in the can. Follow with the halved Shiso leaves (cut side up), and then top with another layer of seasoned rice. Use the plastic wrap to press down firmly, ensuring all layers are compact and well-formed. Wrap the entire block tightly with the plastic wrap.

Step 6

Step 7

Carefully unwrap the compacted rice and Spam block. Place it onto one half of the cut Gim sheet. Gently roll the Gim around the block, pressing to adhere the seam. Ensure the edges are neatly tucked in.

Step 7

Step 8

Place the rolled Spam Musubi seam-side down on a clean surface. This helps the musubi hold its shape securely.

Step 8

Step 9

Slice the Spam Musubi into bite-sized pieces, about 2cm thick. Your delicious Spam Musubi is ready to be enjoyed as a satisfying meal or snack!

Step 9
