- 140g Rice cakes (tteok, for tteokbokki or skewers)
- 90g Vienna sausages
- 6 Skewers
Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 3 Tbsp Ketchup
- 2 Tbsp Oligodang (corn syrup) or corn syrup
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 1/2 Tbsp Soy sauce
- 1/2 Tbsp Minced garlic
- 1/2 Tbsp Sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 3 Tbsp Ketchup
- 2 Tbsp Oligodang (corn syrup) or corn syrup
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 1/2 Tbsp Soy sauce
- 1/2 Tbsp Minced garlic
- 1/2 Tbsp Sesame oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the sauce. In a bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of gochujang, 3 tablespoons of ketchup, 2 tablespoons of oligodang, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1/2 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1/2 tablespoon of minced garlic, and 1/2 tablespoon of sesame oil. Whisk everything together until well combined and smooth. This perfectly balanced sauce is the key to delicious So-tteok So-tteok!
Step 2
Briefly blanch the rice cakes in boiling water for about 1 minute. If your rice cakes are very hard, you can extend the boiling time slightly. After blanching, immediately rinse them under cold water and drain well. This step helps achieve a wonderfully chewy texture.
Step 3
Similarly, blanch the Vienna sausages in boiling water for about 30 seconds. This slightly renders the fat and makes them easier to skewer along with the rice cakes. You can score the sausages lightly with a knife for a more appealing look as they cook.
Step 4
Now, thread the rice cakes and sausages onto the skewers, alternating between them. A pattern like rice cake-sausage-rice cake-sausage looks visually appealing and is easy to eat. Ensure your skewers are sturdy to prevent them from coming apart during cooking.
Step 5
Heat a lightly oiled frying pan over medium-low heat. Place the prepared skewers in the pan and grill them, turning occasionally, until they are lightly golden brown on all sides. Cook until the rice cakes and sausages are heated through and slightly chewy.
Step 6
Once the skewers are lightly grilled, generously brush them with the prepared sauce. Return them to the pan and cook over low heat, flipping them frequently, until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the skewers beautifully. Be careful not to burn the sauce, and aim for a glossy, caramelized finish.
Step 7
Finally, sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds over the finished So-tteok So-tteok for an extra nutty flavor and visual appeal. Arrange them on a plate and enjoy your delicious homemade treat! Yum yum yum, it’s going to be absolutely delicious!
