Shakshuka: A Deliciously Spicy & Sweet Dish Perfect for Dipping Bread
Simple Homemade Shakshuka (Eggs in Purgatory) Recipe: Delicious with Bread!
Eggs in Purgatory is one of those dishes you can make incredibly easily using tomato sauce. I also learned it’s called Shakshuka! Today, I decided to make it to use up some leftover baguette bread at home. It’s a wonderfully flavorful dish that pairs perfectly with bread.
Ingredients- 1/2 Red Bell Pepper, diced
- 1/4 Onion, diced
- 75g Ham, finely diced
- 6 cloves Garlic, thinly sliced
- Olive oil
- 400g Tomato Sauce (store-bought)
- 2 Eggs
- 1 slice Cheddar Cheese, torn into two pieces
- 3 handfuls Mozzarella Cheese (pizza cheese)
- Black Pepper
- 50ml Water
- Baguette bread (for serving)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare half of a red bell pepper by dicing it into bite-sized pieces. Using a colorful bell pepper will make the dish look even more appealing.
Step 2
Dice the 1/4 onion into pieces similar in size to the bell pepper.
Step 3
Finely dice about 75g of ham. You can use your favorite type of ham for this recipe.
Step 4
Thinly slice 6 cloves of garlic. Slicing them thinly will allow their flavor to infuse beautifully into the sauce.
Step 5
Heat a pan over medium-high heat. Add the diced bell pepper, onion, and sliced garlic. Drizzle about two laps of olive oil over the ingredients and sauté until the vegetables soften and become fragrant.
Step 6
Once the onions start to turn translucent, add the diced ham to the pan. Continue to sauté until the ham is lightly browned and releases its savory aroma.
Step 7
When all the vegetables and ham are nicely sautéed, pour in 400g of store-bought tomato sauce. Add 50ml of water and stir everything together well to create a smooth, cohesive sauce.
Step 8
Once the sauce comes to a gentle simmer, carefully crack 2 eggs directly into the sauce, spacing them apart. Place one piece of the torn cheddar cheese near each egg yolk. Then, generously sprinkle about three handfuls of mozzarella cheese over the top. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan with a lid, and let it cook until the egg whites are completely set and opaque. Once the eggs are cooked to your liking, turn off the heat and let it rest, covered, for about 2 more minutes to allow the eggs to finish cooking in the residual heat.
Step 9
After letting it rest, remove the lid. Sprinkle freshly ground black pepper evenly over the surface for an extra touch of flavor.
Step 10
Serve your delicious Shakshuka (Eggs in Purgatory) hot, accompanied by toasted baguette slices or your favorite bread for dipping into the flavorful sauce and runny yolks. Enjoy your homemade masterpiece!
