Main Ingredients
  • 2 clusters of sea grapes (Mul-paraeng), cleaned
  • A small amount of kohlrabi (about 1/4 of a small kohlrabi), thinly julienned

Seasoning Ingredients
  • 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 1/2 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds, lightly crushed
  • 1/3 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp vinegar
  • 1.5 Tbsp fish sauce (anchovy or sand lance)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare two clusters of fresh sea grapes (Mul-paraeng). Using pre-cleaned sea grapes can save you time.

Step 2

Gently rub the sea grapes with a pinch of coarse sea salt to clean them and remove any saltiness. Rinse thoroughly under cold running water multiple times and drain well.

Step 3

Cut the cleaned sea grapes into bite-sized pieces and place them in a large bowl. Peel the kohlrabi and julienne it thinly. While you can use daikon radish, kohlrabi is in season and offers a wonderfully sweet and crisp texture. Combine the prepared sea grapes and julienned kohlrabi in the bowl.

Step 4

Prepare the seasoning for the salad. In a separate small bowl, combine gochugaru, crushed sesame seeds, minced garlic, and fish sauce. Mix well to create the dressing base. (The vinegar will be added at the end.)

Step 5

First, add a portion of the prepared seasoning to the julienned kohlrabi and mix gently. This allows the kohlrabi to absorb the color and flavor of the chili flakes.

Step 6

Now, combine the seasoned kohlrabi with the sea grapes. Add the vinegar and mix everything together gently one last time to ensure all ingredients are evenly coated. Your delicious sea grape and kohlrabi salad is ready! Its refreshing tangy and sweet flavor is sure to whet your appetite.
