Main Ingredients- 1 block (approx. 300g) firm tofu
- 1 can (170g) tuna, drained
- 1 medium onion
- 1 stalk green onion
- 2 Korean green chilies (adjust to your spice preference)
Seasoning- 3 Tbsp tuna extract (or 2 Tbsp soy sauce + 1 Tbsp fish sauce)
- 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 3 Tbsp Korean chili powder (gochugaru)
- A pinch of black pepper
- A pinch of salt (to taste)
- 3 Tbsp tuna extract (or 2 Tbsp soy sauce + 1 Tbsp fish sauce)
- 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 3 Tbsp Korean chili powder (gochugaru)
- A pinch of black pepper
- A pinch of salt (to taste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Cut the block of firm tofu into approximately 2-3 cm cubes. (Referencing the photos and captions can be helpful.)
Step 2
Thinly slice the green onion lengthwise, about 0.5 cm thick.
Step 3
Slice the onion thinly lengthwise, similar to the green onion.
Step 4
Remove the stems from the Korean green chilies and slice them diagonally about 0.5 cm thick. Feel free to add more if you prefer a spicier dish.
Step 5
Now for the sautéing! Add 1 Tbsp of sesame oil to a pot or deep pan and heat over medium-low heat.
Step 6
Add the sliced onions and green onions to the heated sesame oil and stir-fry until fragrant.
Step 7
Once the onions and green onions start to become translucent, continue to stir-fry for about 30 seconds more. Then, reduce the heat to low. Carefully arrange the cubed tofu over the sautéed vegetables.
Step 8
Look at the beautifully arranged tofu! (You can almost imagine a ‘shimmering’ sound here.)
Step 9
Drain the oil completely from the can of tuna and spread it evenly over the tofu. It’s important to drain the oil to avoid making the dish too greasy.
Step 10
Once all ingredients are in the pot, carefully pour in 750ml of water. This amount is for creating a nice, reduced stew consistency.
Step 11
The previous steps are easier to follow by referencing the photos or video recipe.
Step 12
As the water begins to boil, stir in 3 Tbsp of Korean chili powder and 1/2 Tbsp of minced garlic to create the base flavor of the stew. This is where the fundamental taste comes from.
Step 13
Turn the heat up to high and let it simmer for about 5 minutes, with the lid slightly ajar or removed, to allow the sauce to reduce and flavors to meld. This is a crucial step for deepening the taste.
Step 14
Once the sauce has reduced and the tofu and tuna are visible, taste the stew and adjust the seasoning. Add 3 Tbsp of tuna extract and, if needed, a pinch of salt and pepper. *The saltiness of tuna extract can vary, so it’s best to adjust the amount according to your preference.
Step 15
After seasoning, take a moment to relax. (The delicious jjageuli is almost ready!)
Step 16
Continue to simmer for about 2 more minutes after seasoning, then add the diagonally sliced Korean green chilies and bring to a final boil. Your Tofu Tuna Jjageuli is ready! The spiciness of the green chilies cuts through any richness.
Step 17
Even beginners can easily make this delicious Tofu Tuna Jjageuli! It’s incredibly tasty as a side dish or with drinks, so be sure to try it. Thank you for following the recipe. Enjoy your meal! ^-^♡
