Hearty Vienna Sausage Rice Bowl Ingredients

  • 9 plump Vienna sausages
  • 1 bowl of warm rice
  • 1 Tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp water
  • 1/3 Tbsp sugar (approx. 1/2 tsp)
  • 1 tsp oyster sauce
  • 1 fresh egg
  • 1 tsp flavorful butter
  • 1/3 onion, thinly sliced
  • A handful of fresh bean sprouts (optional)
  • A pinch of sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Heat 1 tablespoon of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat until shimmering. While the pan heats up, make 3-4 diagonal scores on each Vienna sausage; this helps the sauce penetrate better. Add the scored sausages to the hot pan and stir-fry, rolling them around, until they are golden brown and slightly puffed. Cook for about 3-4 minutes.

Step 1

Step 2

In an empty space next to the sausages in the pan, crack the egg. You can cook it sunny-side up for a runny yolk or over-easy/well-done, depending on your preference. Cook the egg to your desired doneness while the sausages continue to cook.

Step 2

Step 3

Thinly slice 1/3 of an onion. Add the sliced onions to the pan alongside the sausages and egg. Stir-fry until the onions become translucent and fragrant, releasing their sweet aroma.

Step 3

Step 4

Place 1 bowl of warm rice into your serving bowl. Carefully place the cooked egg on top of the sausage and onion mixture.

Step 4

Step 5

Add 1 teaspoon of butter to one side of the pan. Let the butter melt slowly, releasing its rich, nutty aroma.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the butter is mostly melted, add 1/3 tablespoon of sugar. Stir it into the melting butter until it dissolves, creating a sweet and buttery base.

Step 6

Step 7

When the butter and sugar mixture is fragrant and fully combined, toss the cooked Vienna sausages and onions into this sweet buttery sauce. Stir well to coat everything evenly. Sauté for another minute to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 7

Step 8

Now, let’s add the key flavor components. Pour in 1 tablespoon of soy sauce and 2 tablespoons of water. Stir to combine. For an extra layer of umami, add 1 teaspoon of oyster sauce.

Step 8

Step 9

As the sauce begins to thicken slightly, add a handful of fresh bean sprouts (if using). The bean sprouts will add a delightful crunchy texture to the dish. (If you don’t have bean sprouts, you can skip this step.)

Step 9

Step 10

It’s important not to overcook the bean sprouts. Stir-fry them quickly for about 2-3 minutes, just until they are slightly wilted but still retain their crispness. Overcooking will make them release excess water.

Step 10

Step 11

Arrange the beautifully stir-fried Vienna sausages and vegetables over the rice in the bowl. Finish with a sprinkle of sesame seeds for a final touch of nutty flavor. Your delicious Vienna sausage rice bowl is now ready to be enjoyed! Bon appétit!
