Key Ingredients- 300g Tteokguk rice cakes (Soak in cold water for about 10 minutes)
- 5 cloves garlic, thinly sliced (or 1 Tbsp minced garlic)
- 1 stalk green onion, chopped into bite-sized pieces
- 1/2 onion, thinly sliced into strips
- 1 Tbsp butter (the secret ingredient for richness!)
- 1 Tbsp sugar (adjust to your sweetness preference)
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce (regular or light soy sauce works well)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, soak the Tteokguk rice cakes in cold water for about 10 minutes. This step is crucial to soften the rice cakes, preventing them from sticking together during cooking and ensuring they absorb the sauce beautifully for a more delicious result. After soaking, drain the rice cakes in a colander.
Step 2
Next, let’s prepare the vegetables. Chop the green onion into bite-sized pieces (about 0.5 cm thick). Thinly slice the onion into strips (also about 0.5 cm thick). For the garlic, thinly slice it into slivers – this will enhance its aromatic flavor. (Alternatively, you can use minced garlic.)
Step 3
Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add 1-2 tablespoons of cooking oil. Add the sliced garlic and stir-fry until it turns golden brown and fragrant. Once you can smell the delicious garlic aroma, your tteokbokki is on its way to greatness! Be careful not to burn the garlic as you sauté it.
Step 4
Once the garlic is nicely browned, add the drained rice cakes to the pan. Stir-fry them together with the garlic for about 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Stir-frying will make the rice cakes slightly softer and chewier, enhancing their texture.
Step 5
When the rice cakes are slightly softened, add the sliced onions to the pan and continue to stir-fry. Once the onions begin to turn translucent, add the butter, sugar, and soy sauce. The butter will melt, adding a wonderful nutty aroma, while the sugar and soy sauce create a perfect savory-sweet balance.
Step 6
Finally, add the chopped green onions and stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes until everything is well combined. The fresh taste of the green onions will add another layer of flavor. Your Soy-Butter Tteokbokki is ready when the sauce coats the rice cakes with a glossy sheen. It’s best enjoyed immediately while warm!
