Savory Spam & Perilla Leaf Rice Balls Recipe
How to Make Delicious Spam and Perilla Leaf Rice Balls
Enjoy a hearty and simple Spam dish! These rice balls are incredibly satisfying and easy to make. ^^
Ingredients
- 1/2 can Spam (approx. 200g)
- 10 perilla leaves
- 1/2 tsp toasted sesame seeds
- 2 bowls cooked rice (approx. 400g)
- 1 tsp sesame oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, thoroughly wash the perilla leaves under running water and gently pat them dry. Trim off the tough stems, then fold each leaf in half and roll it up tightly. Slice the rolled leaves thinly into shreds. Gently loosen the shredded perilla leaves with your hands to separate them.
Step 2
Open the Spam can and cut it into four equal, approximately 1cm thick slices. Heat a pan over medium-low heat and place the Spam slices in it. Grill both sides until golden brown and slightly crispy. The Spam will render some of its delicious fat as it cooks.
Step 3
In a large bowl, add the warm cooked rice (about 2 bowls). Add the shredded perilla leaves, 1/2 tsp of toasted sesame seeds for a nutty aroma, and 1 tsp of sesame oil for smoothness. Gently mix everything together using a spatula or spoon, ensuring the rice grains don’t clump.
Step 4
Line a square mold, bento box, or container with plastic wrap, leaving some overhang. Spread about 1/4 of the seasoned rice mixture evenly at the bottom of the mold. Be careful not to make this layer too thick, as it might make it difficult to shape later.
Step 5
Place the golden-brown grilled Spam slices on top of the rice layer. Then, cover the Spam with another 1/3 of the seasoned rice mixture, pressing down gently to encapsulate the Spam. Pat it down firmly to create a compact shape.
Step 6
Carefully lift the molded rice out of the container using the plastic wrap. Remove the plastic wrap. Slice the rice log into bite-sized pieces (e.g., about 2-3 cm thick) to serve your delicious Spam and Perilla Leaf Rice Balls. Enjoy this hearty and flavorful meal!
