Main Ingredients

  • 150g Korean fish cakes (eomuk), cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/4 medium onion (about 50g), thinly sliced
  • 1/4 medium carrot (about 30g), thinly sliced
  • 1/4 stalk green onion (about 20g), thinly sliced diagonally
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds (for garnish)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the fish cakes by cutting them into bite-sized pieces. If you’re using square fish cakes, cut them into 2-3 sections. Thin, flat fish cakes can be used as they are. Thinly slice the onion and carrot, and cut the green onion diagonally. Having all your ingredients prepped makes the cooking process much smoother.

Step 1

Step 2

Heat about 1 tablespoon of cooking oil in a frying pan over low heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, being careful not to burn it. Sautéing the garlic first will enhance the overall flavor of the dish. Once the garlic is fragrant, add the prepared fish cakes and stir-fry over medium heat for a minute or two. Lightly stir-frying the fish cakes helps them hold their shape better and absorb the sauce more effectively.

Step 2

Step 3

Add the sliced onion and carrot to the pan with the fish cakes and stir-fry until the vegetables begin to soften slightly. Now, add the soy sauce (2 Tbsp) and sugar (1 Tbsp). Stir everything well to ensure the ingredients are evenly coated with the sauce. Feel free to adjust the sweetness and saltiness to your preference.

Step 3

Step 4

After stirring in the soy sauce and sugar, add about 3-4 tablespoons of water. Adding water and simmering will prevent the fish cakes from becoming too salty and help maintain their tender, moist texture. Continue to cook over medium-low heat until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the ingredients. Finally, add the sliced green onions and stir briefly. Sprinkle with sesame seeds for garnish.

Step 4

Step 5

And there you have it – delicious Soy-Braised Fish Cakes! This is a fantastic side dish to serve with a bowl of hot rice, or enjoy on its own. It’s a comforting and satisfying dish for any meal. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator and enjoyed cold as well!
