  • Occasion : Snack
  • Cooking : Deep-fry
  • Servings : 2 servings
  • Difficulty : Beginner

Main Ingredients

  • 20 Rice cakes (tteokbokki tteok)
  • 20 Vienna sausages

Spicy & Sweet Sauce

  • 0.5 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 3 Tbsp Ketchup
  • 1 Tbsp Soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Mirin (cooking wine)
  • 3 Tbsp Corn syrup or Honey
  • 0.5 Tbsp Minced garlic

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s soften the rice cakes if they are hard. Cover the rice cakes with plastic wrap and microwave for about 2 minutes. Alternatively, you can briefly boil them in hot water until they become soft and pliable. Once softened, thread them directly onto the prepared wooden skewers.

Step 1

Step 2

Now, let’s make the delicious sauce that will define the flavor of your So-tteok So-tteok. In a bowl, combine 0.5 Tbsp gochujang, 3 Tbsp ketchup, 3 Tbsp corn syrup (or honey), 1 Tbsp soy sauce, half a tablespoon of minced garlic, and 1 Tbsp mirin. Mix everything together with a spoon until well combined to create the sauce.

Step 2

Step 3

It’s time to assemble your So-tteok So-tteok! Alternate threading the rice cakes and Vienna sausages onto the wooden skewers. One rice cake, then one sausage, placed nicely next to each other, will create the appealing look of So-tteok So-tteok.

Step 3

Step 4

Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add a very small amount of oil. Place the skewered So-tteok So-tteok onto the pan and cook slowly over low heat, turning them occasionally, until they are golden brown and lightly fried on all sides. Be careful not to burn them while cooking.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the rice cakes and sausages are nicely browned, it’s time to coat them in sauce. Keep the heat on low, pour the prepared sauce into the pan, and let it simmer until it thickens slightly. When the sauce has reduced to a nice consistency, add all the skewers and toss gently to coat them evenly with the sauce. If you’d like to enjoy different flavor variations, you can brush the thickened sauce onto the skewers using a pastry brush, or top them with ketchup or mustard to your preference before enjoying each bite!
