Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean red pepper flakes)
  • 1 Tbsp perilla oil
  • 2 Korean chili peppers (cheongyang)
  • 1 handful green onions (or scallions)
  • A pinch of sugar (optional)
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Hello everyone! Today, we’re going to make a delicious braised tofu dish seasoned with savory soy sauce and fragrant perilla oil. It’s incredibly easy to make and perfect as a side dish for rice.

Step 1

Step 2

First, cut the tofu into bite-sized pieces, about 1 to 1.5 cm thick. Gently pat the tofu dry with paper towels; this helps prevent oil splattering when frying and allows the tofu to become nicely golden and crisp. Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Pan-fry the tofu pieces on both sides until they are golden brown and slightly crispy. This step enhances the tofu’s texture and helps it absorb the sauce better.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, let’s prepare the delicious sauce! In a bowl, combine 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp gochugaru, a pinch of sugar (adjust to your sweetness preference), and 1 Tbsp minced garlic. Mix everything well. Finely chop the Korean chili peppers and thinly slice the green onions diagonally. Arrange the golden-fried tofu pieces in the pan. Pour the prepared sauce evenly over the tofu. Scatter the chopped chili peppers and green onions on top for garnish.

Step 3

Step 4

Lower the heat to medium-low and let the sauce simmer and reduce until it becomes slightly thick and coats the tofu. Gently stir or flip the tofu occasionally to ensure it doesn’t break and that the sauce is evenly distributed. Once the sauce has reduced to your desired consistency, drizzle in 1 Tbsp of perilla oil. Adding the perilla oil at the end, just before turning off the heat, preserves its wonderful aroma and flavor.

Step 4

Step 5

And there you have it – a delectable braised tofu dish with perilla oil and soy sauce! It’s absolutely delicious served over a warm bowl of rice. Enjoy a satisfying meal with this flavorful tofu today!
