Main Ingredients

  • 1 block Tofu (approx. 300g)
  • 1 Tbsp Perilla Oil
  • A pinch of Salt

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the tofu. Slice the tofu into relatively thick pieces, about 1.5-2cm thick, into your desired serving size. Lightly season the sliced tofu with a pinch of salt. This helps to remove any unwanted tofu scent and seasons the tofu from within, making it more flavorful. (Tip: If you have time, you can drain the tofu slices on a sieve for about 10 minutes to remove excess moisture. This will result in an even crispier texture. However, you can skip this step if you’re short on time.)

Step 1

Step 2

Now it’s time to fry the tofu. Heat 1 tablespoon of perilla oil in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Perilla oil has a low smoke point, so it’s best to cook it gently over medium-low heat rather than high heat to prevent burning and to preserve its nutty aroma. Once the oil is heated, carefully place the seasoned tofu slices into the pan.

Step 2

Step 3

Once one side of the tofu is golden brown and cooked, flip it over to cook the other side evenly. Patience is key here; cooking it slowly will help achieve a crispy exterior while keeping the inside tender and soft. Continue to cook until both sides are beautifully golden and appetizing. The sizzling sound of the tofu cooking is already making your mouth water!

Step 3

Step 4

Arrange the perfectly pan-fried tofu with perilla oil on a serving plate. It’s best enjoyed warm to fully appreciate its savory aroma. For an enhanced flavor experience, you can serve it with a soy-based dipping sauce, a spicy gochujang sauce, or a fresh wild chive salad (dallae muchim). Enjoy your delicious and fragrant pan-fried tofu!
