Savory Cabbage Namul with Fish Sauce
A Simple Cabbage Side Dish Using Fish Sauce
A wonderfully simple and quick side dish made from cabbage. This recipe adds a delightful savory and slightly sweet flavor with the addition of fish sauce, making it a versatile accompaniment to any meal.
Ingredients- Cabbage 200g
- Sugar 1/2 Tbsp
- Water 150ml
- Fish Sauce 2 Tbsp
- Sesame Oil 1/2 Tbsp
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Thoroughly wash the cabbage. Remove the core and thinly slice it into fine shreds, about 0.3cm thick. After shredding, place the cabbage in a colander to drain excess water. This step is crucial to prevent the dish from becoming watery.
Step 2
In a bowl, combine the drained shredded cabbage with the sugar (1/2 Tbsp). Toss well to coat the cabbage evenly. The sugar will help to slightly draw out moisture from the cabbage and begin to tenderize it.
Step 3
Pour the water (150ml) into a heated pan. Add the sugared cabbage to the pan. Cook over medium-low heat, allowing the cabbage to simmer gently and the liquid to reduce. Continue cooking until the cabbage becomes tender and the liquid has partially evaporated, about halfway.
Step 4
Once the liquid has reduced by about half, add the fish sauce (2 Tbsp). Stir the mixture continuously, allowing the savory flavor of the fish sauce to infuse into the cabbage. Continue to cook until all the liquid has completely evaporated and the cabbage is coated.
Step 5
Turn off the heat. Add the sesame oil (1/2 Tbsp) and mix thoroughly with the cabbage. Stir until the fragrant aroma of the sesame oil is well distributed throughout the dish. Your delicious cabbage namul is now ready to serve!
