Main Ingredients

  • 1 block firm tofu
  • 1/2 cup water (approx. 100ml)
  • 1 handful green onions, chopped

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Braised tofu cooked in soy sauce is so flavorful that it’s truly a ‘rice thief’ when served atop hot, steamed rice. You won’t need any other side dishes; it makes a satisfying and delicious meal all on its own.

Step 1

Step 2

Excess water from the tofu can cause oil splatters, leading to potential burns and making cleanup difficult. Gently press the tofu with paper towels to absorb as much moisture as possible. This step is crucial for safe cooking and achieving a nicely seared exterior.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the tofu is patted dry, it’s time to sear it in a pan. Place the tofu slices in a lightly oiled pan over medium heat. Pan-fry them, flipping occasionally, until each side is golden brown and slightly crispy. This searing process adds a wonderful texture and depth of flavor.

Step 3

Step 4

While the tofu is searing, let’s prepare the delicious braising liquid. In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup of water with 2 tsp soy sauce, 1 tsp gochugaru, 1/2 tsp sugar, 1 tsp minced garlic, and 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds. You can also add 1/2 tsp of sesame oil for extra aroma, if desired. Whisk everything together until well combined.

Step 4

Step 5

When the tofu pieces are beautifully golden brown on all sides, carefully pour the prepared soy sauce mixture over them in the pan. Ensure the liquid coats the tofu evenly.

Step 5

Step 6

Let the mixture simmer gently. Once the sauce starts to thicken and coats the tofu nicely, add the handful of chopped green onions. Continue to simmer for another 1-2 minutes over medium-low heat, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to reduce slightly. The green onions add a fresh, aromatic finish.

Step 6

Step 7

And there you have it – a perfectly completed, nutritious, and delicious braised tofu dish! Serve it hot alongside your favorite rice for a wonderful home-cooked meal that’s both visually appealing and incredibly tasty. Enjoy your culinary creation!
